One of the interesting attractions to see in the Grant Grove of Kings Canyon National Park is the Fallen Monarch. This is a fallen giant sequoia with a large hollowed out space that has been used over the centuries by Native Americans and early pioneers as a shelter, hotel and even a saloon during the late 19th century. You'll find the Fallen Monarch along the walking trail that makes way through the Grant Grove. You can walk through the open trunk of the ancient tree through its middle and out the opening 20 metres away. The Fallen Monarch is a unique experience and something well worth making a few minutes to enjoy when spending time in he Grant Grove area of the national park.

We visited Kings Canyon National Park last year. While doing the General Grant Tree trail we stumbled upon the Fallen Monarch. The 125 ft high Fallen Monarch is a giant redwood log fallen more than 300 years ago. The tree was hollowed out by a fire. Native Americans used it as shelter. We walked inside the log and found a crack inside where baby bats were living. We were about to miss it, but a fellow traveller noticed it and showed it to us. It was totally a different experience.

A small little hike to get to this area. Probably around 5 minutes? It is something you don’t want to miss and it’s an interesting to visit because they carved out a little tunnel out of the fallen sequoia tree. It is a little bit narrow at one of the end and it gets wider on the other side. Overall, I highly suggest to visit this and take your time to soak in the history of this tree.

Fallen Monarch is the name of the sequoia that has fallen and is now used as a narrow corridor that shortcuts the trails of the loop to the General Grand. It is a must see attraction since it will give you great photo opportunities and your kids will enjoy this short adventure.

Walk through a Sequoia! This fallen tree connects two sections of the path. You can walk through or duck out in the middle to be close to the base of a tree. Its neat to see and surprisingly roomy. It was a little icy while I was there.
