The Giant Forest Museum is about the giant sequoia trees in the Sequoia National Park in southern California in which the museum is located. This place is a must see for anyone... young, old, used to hiking or unable to hike because everyone can see the surrounding giants and be awed by simply driving through the park. We are not hikers and I have an arthritic knee so we were only able to walk the short walks but the walks we took advantage of would accommodate a wheelchair as well. We entered through the SW entrance and drove up mountainsides before reaching the trees and forested areas; the scenery was breathtaking! For me it was breathtaking for the scenery but also quite literally because I have a fear of heights and we drove up mountainsides to get to the trees but I'd do it again. My husband was patient and drove slowly to accommodate my fear. If you absolutely could not take the height, there are more National Parks protecting the giant redwoods in northern California that does not include mountainsides. My 82 year old mother and myself drove through the northern park about 4 years ago and it was equally beautiful. We both speak of it often. There may have been hiking trails there as well but I am not aware of them. I have included pictures but the truth is the pictures just can't do them justice.... you need to be there to take in the majesty of these trees! I encourage all to at least drive through one of these parks if it is at all possible. We drove almost 3,000 miles to get there and it was well worth it!

The Giant Forest Museum is located along the General's Highway in the Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park. Opening hours are 9am to 6pm daily. Note that during the winter season when the Lodgepole Visitor Centre is closed, the Giant Forest Museum serves as the area visitor centre for the park. As such, this is where you need to stop to talk to rangers, find out about trail and road conditions and ask general questions about the park that you may have. As for the museum, we found this to be a nice place to learn about the giant sequoia trees for which the park is known. There are informative and educational displays, exhibits and film that do a nice job of presenting the famous sequoias. We found this very useful to go through before hitting the trails to see these beautiful giants. Note that there is a large parking lot just across the street from the museum. Further, before or after visiting, you can walk to the Big Tree loop trail nearby or hike/drive the Crescent Meadow Drive to Moro Rock, Auto Log and the Tunnel Tree.

Our visit to Sequoia National Park at Kingโs Canyon was really something special. We parked at the museum, then hopped on the free shuttles that took us around the park to different spots, and let me tell youโฆ it's stunning out here ๐คฉ just breathtaking. These trees are the biggest on Earth and seeing them in person is something else my kids absolutely loved it, they couldnโt stop talking about how huge the trees were. Weโre definitely planning on coming backโฆ I will say tho itโs really sad that over 10,000 of these beautiful sequoias died in the fire in 2020 ๐ฅบ I didnโt realize how bad it was until we got here and saw it for ourselves, It's heartbreaking to think about how many of these ancient trees are just gone now. Even with the loss, the park is still an amazing place to visit and thereโs so much to see and do. Itโs a reminder of how important it is to protect places like this so future generations can enjoy them too โ๏ธ

The Giant Forest Museum is a great place to stop for information when you are exploring Sequoia National Park! There are knowledgeable and friendly NPS Rangers, educational displays and souvenirs for sale that support the park. There are flush restrooms as well as free parking located across the street. There is also a Sequoia Shuttle bus stop so it's a great place to park your vehicle if you are planning on riding the free shuttle. There are lots of trails to access from this location such as the Big Trees Trail, Trail to Moro Rock, Sunset Rock, Bear Hill, Hazelwood Nature Trail (wheelchair accessible) and many more. There is no food or gasoline available at this location. The Rangers also often do educational talks here so be sure to check out the schedule posted outside.

I visited Sequoia National Park in late July 2024 and strolled through the Giant Forest Museum before setting off to hike. It's a good place to visit for information about sequoias before exploring the park. It has a small gift shop. Being in the presence of so many sequoias is a special experience. Really amazing! Many trails and services throughout the park. The park has a really good shuttle service that operates from the summer to early fall. The Sequoia Shuttle, shuttle service to and from Visalia, CA to Sequoia National Park, is a great car free option to get to the park.
