Not good for kids. If you are on a tour it would be great since tours and seeing the ocean are more important then a child's life. No issues last year but this year we were told to either swim or leave because tours need to be able to drive close to ocean. Children play in the ocean and build sand castles , a typical day at the beach. Sorry that tours mean more than a child . We have 4 wheel drive and should be able to enjoy a day at the beach without worrying about some tour bus running your kid over or coming between you and your kids . Once you leave the pavement and get onto the beach there are stretches of nothing but wild OBX beach and horses. Even the “streets” heading west from the ocean are unpaved. It is a dead end trip as once you get to the Virginia-North Carolina border, Virginia’s False Cape State Park does not have vehicular traffic except for emergencies. Don’t just ride the beach – drive over into Carova and check out the channel houses that have Knotts Island Bay access. Not hard to see why this place is...
   Read moreThis is one of the coolest 4x4 beach drive ever and definitely a highlight for us in OBX. So much fun driving from HWY 12 right onto the sand! Wide beach so no problem with 2 way traffic. Seeing the wild horses was an absolute bonus. We did see quite a few cars stuck in sand at the start of the beach drive so do make sure that you have a 4x4 and follow the guidelines.
