I had a deeply disappointing and unprofessional experience with the Crestone Artisans Gallery. After submitting my artist statement and images via email, I visited the gallery in person to inquire about the membership application process. Instead of a warm or even neutral reception, I was met with repeated discouraging remarks, including being told more than once that “we don’t need anybody new.” The tone was cold and dismissive, and I left feeling unwelcome—not just as an artist, but as a member of the local creative community.
Rejection is part of any juried process, and I fully understand if space is limited or my work isn’t a fit. However, the manner in which this was communicated lacked basic courtesy and professionalism. No follow-up. No response to my outreach. Not even a simple acknowledgment or apology weeks later.
As someone with years of experience in the arts, including leadership roles at thriving community-based galleries, I expected better. Crestone deserves an art space that is welcoming, inclusive, and supportive—not one that alienates artists...
