The three stars is for the experience not for the product.
Full disclosure: I have worked in the industry and have founded craft distilleries in Louisiana and Kentucky.
We were exploring West Virginia professionally and decided to visit this distillery out of curiosity. The owners were cordial.
The marketing strategy is definitely hokey but somewhat effective since it draws the punters in. Those who do come probably know what to expect and appreciate a good show. Unlike what some reviewers have said the property is not beautiful. People need to travel more evidently.
The flavored moonshine is subpar and in some cases undrinkable. The bourbon isn't worth wasting your time on. The wine is a complete waste considering the wine options that exist.
Still, kudos to the owners, they seem to know how to draw in the suckers who will pay for a bit of theatre. A bit of a free booze theme park. I do hope they are self aware of what they have created because I honestly found them successful, and...
Read moreThe Hatfield Family Distillery is located just off the road at the top of a hill. It is a beautiful facility and the owners were very friendly and helpful. Bill Hatfield is a direct descendant of Devil Hatfield and a fifth generation moonshiner. They have 340 acres and grow their own grapes for wine. They also distill bourbon and moonshine. We didn’t taste the wine (a reason to go back) but sampled a number of the bourbons and several moonshines. They have a lot of flavored moonshines which we would have loved to tasted more if we weren’t driving. We were allowed to taste (and then fill a bottle) from an 8 year bourbon which was amazing. We bought quite a few bottles and will likely make a trip down from Ohio just to...
Read moreWe’ve done a lot of Wine and Distillery visits and tastings as we travel around the US and we have to say this one is at the top of our list. What a pleasant and enjoyable experience! The couple who own and run the place are so friendly and so ready to please. They let you taste anything you want. They’re so proud of their creations. The couple even took us into the back to show us how they make all the product. A hidden gem only about 15 miles outside Charleston. We couldn’t pass on getting a Military/Make Moonshine great Moonshine and a honey moonshine. My wife also had to get two versions of Meemaw wines since she’s a Memaw. From Ky and we’ll definitely stop every time we come through...
