This is a very short, easy hike to the falls. And you get two falls for the one hike! The most challenging part is actually the drive there. It’s a single lane road with a lot of curves and you need to drive slowly in case someone’s coming the other way and then one of you will often have to back up in order to get to a spot where you can pass one another. The road is also bumpy off Roading (non-paved). The two waterfalls are beautiful, and the parking is very close to the trailhead.
There will be absolutely no cell service for you along most of the drive or at the Falls. And there are no restrooms. You will need to go off Trail if you need to pop a squat. Also, there is poison ivy around so look out for what leaf you grab (I have a photo of some poison ivy ride along the trail)
A lot of people wonder when they come from Vogel and see the signs for Hilton Creek Falls if they can keep going and drive past the Falls down the dirt road- and you can! You will have to drive through two streams (so make sure you’re in a car that can do that) but you will come out, not too far away and have a very nice drive through the woods.
People love to get in the water at the falls and there’s often a pretty big crowd in the summer! We also saw a little brown water snake that scared a lot of the kids. And fireflies were absolutely everywhere eating up the mosquitoes for us.
The water is very cold and refreshing, especially in the hot summer months. If you’re going to want to sit up on the viewing tax, please be advised that during the mid afternoon late afternoon, there’s nowhere to sit in the shade. You will need to be standing if...
Read moreHelton Creek Falls is located between Desoto Falls and Voguel State Park. Came here for the first time today after driving right past it for so long.
From the main highway, you turn onto Helton Creek Rd and immediately you are driving on a one-way street through a scenic neighborhood. The pavement ends about halfway there and thus begins the annoying process of avoiding potholes on an uneven gravel road. After much bouncin' and jerkin', a parking area for about 10 vehicles is clearly visible with a sign posted at the trailhead. You can almost see the falls through the trees and it's only about .25 of a mile to the end. A nice path with wooden stairs and small footbridges helps you get to the overlook decks. There's a lower waterfall and an upper one, both of which are magnificent!
No restrooms are present and despite the rainy weather, I saw a fair number of people with dogs or kids. The falls and general area are simply beautiful and well worth any trouble getting there. Highly...
Read moreAwesome! If you drive to this spot on Google Maps, you'll wonder where the parking lot and trial is. Go a bit further east of this spot, there is a parking lot. There's a lower falls and then two more viewing platforms, make sure you go all the way up to the top, it's beautiful. Here October 25, the trees are turning beautiful fall colors.
Narrow one lane road, you're really off the beaten path, which is great. If you are going east away from the falls (or driving west towards the falls), the road goes THROUGH the creek in two spots. This time of year, SUVs and trucks and Jeeps were fine. Car probably wouldn't make one of the crossings. I gunned it in a minivan and made it, but probably wasn't the brightest thing I've done. If you enter from 129 and go back out to 129, this won't be a problem. And if you have a rig, this is...
