Flag Pole Hill Park is located just north of White Rock Lake. As the name indicates, there is a very large American flag that flies at the top of the hill and when I first moved to Dallas some 40 years ago, it was just called Flagpole Hill, and you could see the lake from up there. But in the last 40 years the trees have grown up so much, that you can’t see the lake any longer, but they provides lots of wonderful greenery and much-needed shade. I was amazed at the transformation of what is now called a park instead of just Flag Pole Hill. It’s been probably 30 years since I had been up there.
It has been transformed into a beautiful oasis of a park with wide-open pastures, picnic tables and a large shelterhouse with picnic tables that can accommodate a good-sized group gathering, or even a small one. The day that I was there, about 20 people were celebrating a child’s birthday. The grounds are well kept, the facilities in good shape, and there is a beautiful and modern playground for kids.
Because of the elevation, and now being surrounded by so many mature trees, you can’t even hear traffic noise from the VERY busy NW Highway at the bottom of the hill. You wouldn’t know you were in the middle of a huge city.
This could definitely be classified as a “hidden gem“, because they are just far enough off the beaten path that if you don’t know about it, you would drive right by not knowing what you were missing. Therefore, I’m going to include a map of the location, which you can of course obtain yourself from...

Read morePark is great, but Octoberfest event is awful. 1 hour wait for any food. Awfully planned. Not enough food vendors and the ones that are there seem clueless as to how to serve an event like this. Extremely expensive. Eat beforehand or avoid at all cost.
Food lines were all so slow everyone left the lines and just drank alcohol which is just not safe. I personally tried to get food 4 times and gave up each time.
I will never attend again as it was just as awful the last time i went. But here is my advice....Spread out these poor food vendors and get 5x more of them. Make a food truck section. Food is practically not available at this event due to poor planning, so people's safety depends on this. Get more generators to support spreading them put (or put in permanent hook ups).
Have one or two volunteers help expedite lines.
Rent stanchions and put ropes in front of every popular food vendor.
Have a few quick serve vendors that have pre made food (existing vendors were serving at a pace if about 10 minutes an order which is crazy).
People's safety depends on you getting...
