My son and I drove from Garland to enjoy a nice day outdoors with just me and him, since he is graduating this year and going to college in the fall. I have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and use a power chair. I checked before we left to see if the facility and the trails were ADA accessible and the website indicated that this was the case. When we arrived, however, we discovered that this is not entirely true. I cannot drive my wheelchair so my son was trying to navigate the big doors that open and drive my wheelchair in at the same time. There is no wheelchair entrance. Thankfully other guests were willing to hold the doors open for us. We were greeted by one friendly young man at the front desk and I inquired about a map of their Ada accessible trails, but he told me that unfortunately they did not have any maps.
We went further into the center and none of the TV displays were on, the make a river feature was broken, as well as many of the other features. We circle around to the gift shop and there was no one in there to assist us in many of the prices were not marked on the items that we were considering for purchase. The center itself was a disappointment and could have been so much better.
We went down the Wetland trails because the boardwalk was ADA accessible and at the end you can go left or right. We went down the left side and it circled around and then there was a large drop-down to the trail below which I could not get my wheelchair down. So we decided to Circle back and we looked down the right Trail and it did the same thing. We just went back into the facility walked around the parking lot got in a car and went home. This could have been a much better experience. My son has pictures on his phone which I will add later. I hope to return with all of these...
Read moreI fell in love with The Audubon immediately. The huge windows, the beautiful architecture, the ceiling and walls; every part of this physical space was stunning. Even beyond the gorgeous physical setting, Boxwood and their entire team know what they’re doing. The catering, which is through them, was incredible. I have several friends and family with food allergies, and they accommodated everything easily. The food was delicious, and they make everything in such a way that no food is wasted. The bar area is centrally located without disrupting the dance floor, and when I asked that special care be given for recycling, they told me they already have that in place! Working with Ashley was especially wonderful. I had a planner, but the coordinator at TRAC was also readily available, and had solutions for every single scenario I had questions about. Ashley was truly a dream to work with. From start to finish, every person I worked with at TRAC and Boxwood was genuinely incredible. They know their stuff. But perhaps the best part of working with them was how special our wedding day felt. I know they do this nearly every weekend with hundreds (maybe thousands) of couples. Yet my family and I felt like our wedding was the only one on their plate. They cared about our questions and were excited with us every step of the way. I loved working with this team and cannot recommend them, or this stunning site, enough. Thank you...
Read moreToday after lunch I visited Trinity River Audubon Center after flagging it in places I want to visit a while ago.
Ten miles South of Downtown Dallas sits the 120+ acre former dumping site of tires, auto parts, trash and other unwanted waste that burned and was repurposed by the City of Dallas to the current iteration. It is now a natural habitat for birds and other wildlife open to the public Tuesday through Sunday 9am-4pm.
The property houses a large main building with educational information explaining the importance of a nature and wildlife conservation space and water flow especially in a metropolitan area. There are a few miles of hiking trails(mostly flat land) comprised of natural dirt, crushed stone and low decks that keep you just above water to fully appreciate the space and understand its relevance.
It is a great activity for people young and old who are new to the city or like me who have lived in the Dallas area my entire life.
