Camped the week of July4-9 2021, most everyone was cleared out by Tuesday so we had plenty of space. Reserved the entire group camping area (Area G) w/no electric hookup, and it was HUGE. Extremely clean campground. We had a large group with about 20 people and still had so much room to space out. Our area had lots of level open land and small trees throughout to hang hammocks with a small patch of woods on the North side. If it’s hot don’t set up tent under in the wooded area, use the open space, Bc there is absolutely zero breeze coming through the small patch of woods and you’ll be miserable lol. We were right between the shower/bathroom building and had our own small bathroom behind us. Definitely recommend using the shower/bathroom building instead of the small bathroom building in the woods, it’s clean but much darker & full of spiders. The showers are spotless, as are the bathrooms in that building. Beach was small but so nice and clean, waters very warm, plenty of parking, & you can walk all the way out to the breaker rocks and still only be waist deep. If you get there in the morning before everyone else comes the water is so clear you can see the bottom as far as you can go out. Sign says no floatation devices of any kind allowed, but nobody’s there to enforce it, so most everyone there had pool noodles or tubes to float around on. Campground signs also say “no alcohol”, but who camps with no alcohol? Camp store was nice, but the “game room” is just a room with tables. Nature Center was closed so I don’t know what’s in there. DON’T LEAVE ANY COOLERS, TRASH OR BACKPACKS outside at night, these raccoons here are not afraid at all and will walk up and snatch it right in front of you. They stole one of my kids backpacks, ripped open a case of unopened Hugs juice boxes, scattered my bucket of empty drink cans, and they can definitely open a cooler. They’ll also try to get in your tent at night if you have any food in there. They’re not aggressive at all, just cute furry little thieves. Looked like a very dog friendly place, lots of campers had their dogs & bikes, and wide bike paths everywhere. There was a (stray?) cat hanging around us the whole time, Orange, neutered male. He had his ear notched, was well fed, clean, & didn’t have a single flea or tick on him, so we assumed he was the resident mouse hunter? Very friendly though, sat on our laps around the campfire at night. Will definitely be returning to this campground, we had an...
Read moreWe camped here. The campground is lovely. The old bathrooms are old but clean enough. The new bathrooms are nice, but the bugs and spiders make it hard to fall clean, but it is camping!! There isn't a ton of shade, but there are several mature trees. However, the spiders drop out of the branches like rain drops and after 4 days I'm pretty sure my tiny camper and SUV were infested with Stretch Spiders. They aren't the ticklish spiders, but they are all spiders. We'd stay here again, just not under a tree. The showers are two options, in a stall set up with adjustable temp water and curtains, or in spacious private rooms (no toilets) with out the ability to change the water temp. The water was scalding hot and would've likely caused tears with my kids. And being a hot July, it was a miserable shower. You also had to keep pushing a button to turn the water on. That was water saving, but obnoxious after the 10th push. The shower house with stalls and the individual rooms were stifling, hot and in need of fans or windows desperately. The store is still stocked, had great ice cream and friendly employees. The grounds were very clean and tidy. The beach was nice and had sand rinsing outdoor showers. The water was very shallow for a long way out when the tide was low, and the water was teetering on too warm. I enjoyed searching oit the tiniest shells I could find. Aside from the floating green algae blobs or whatever, the water looked pretty clear (until the tide came in). The wifi signal is decent enough (not awesome enough for streaming). The price and availability were on point. We will return. And, bonus, it's only 30 min from Cedar Point. There's also a nearby Orchard (with farm market) on Catawba Island (7min away) that had amazing peaches and peach muffins. Cheesehaven, in town,...
Read moreBeautiful place, it was kinda crowded and I was attacked by an Eastern Eyed Click Beetle. Other than that the water was perfect temperature for the semi-cloudy day I went on. The sand was soft and the sights were just beautiful. Again I loved it, just too many bugs but what can you say I was in nature, that's a bugs natural habitat.
It was also quite noisy because children and we got there around 4 pm but around 6-7:30 did the crowd taper out and it was still quite chill and warm. The peace and quiet with the warm water and waves 10/10.
They had a decent amount of picnic tables, and while I didn't use the bathrooms they did have them so use at your own risk. Also they only had two stations to rinse off your feet and body from sand and lake water so keep that in mind if you are coming in a big group.
They also had a small playground near the parking lot and the day I went there was a Kona ice truck. Although I forgot to get any, haha.
Would be 5/5 but the Eastern Eyed Click Beetle scared the poop out of me as it flew directly onto me. Landing right on my swimsuit while I was trying to enjoy my cucumber sandwich and fruit lunch with my friends. This beetle proceeded to crawl near our food once I freaked out and flicked it off of me. It proceeded to flip itself over and jump in the air. In my freakout I hurt my poor left thumb somehow by accidentally slamming it against a metal folding chair or something hard, wasn't truly paying attention and was focused on the bug attacking me. The bug proceeded to play dead, something I learned it does to like I guess shoe off predators.
Also the mosquitos and flies were at like their peak!
Anyway I am just lucky it didn't feel super threatened, and proceed to bite me with its strong mandibles. So 4/5 stars just for a bugs other than...
