One of the best places in the area to go walking if you’re a dog owner, Bear Mountain Reservation has a system of trails on light hills next to Candlewood Lake.

The longest of these is the looping red trail, twisting through open fields and peaceful forest.

On this route you’ll come to a junction with the orange trail, which drops down the rather precipitous slope to Candlwood Lake if you need to work those calves.

South of the property is FCI Danbury, a low-security federal prison, mainly for female inmates.

You may be interested to know that famous conscientious objectors like James Peck and Robert Lowell were imprisoned here in WWII, as was screenwriter Ring Lardner Jr., who was blacklisted in 1947 during...

Love this park, but, need to get people's attention. On Sunday January 8, in broad daylight, around 3:00 in the afternoon, at least 3 cars were broken into in a smash-and-grab style theft, and robbed of their contents while people were hiking in the park. Each of the cars had a side window completely smashed in (I mean, gone) and purses, cellphones, and house keys taken. The Danbury police had been called (they arrived when I exited the trail) and all families filed police reports, but what a wakeup call. The park clearly needs better police patrols, security cameras, or something. Danbury no...

My friend had never been to the Bear Mountain Reservation and I hadn't been there in years. So, we did what friends do - we went to a drive-thru coffee shop and took our beverages to the reservation. We never got as far as the hiking trail; we sat at one of the picnic tables next to the parking lot and talked, gabbed, chatted, etc. Before we knew it, 2 hours had passed. In this stress-filled society with its hectic pace, it's important, for your peace of mind, to slow down and appreciate what's around you. Bear Mountain Reservation is just...

First time in Connecticut and let’s just say—she passed the vibe check. Bear Mountain Reservation brought the views, the smells, and the tail wags. Where should I hike next? 👇 #MurphyOnAMission #BearMountainReservation #ConnecticutHikes #TravelDog #SmallDogBigAdventure #YorkieVibes #FYP

Paved parking lot accommodates roughly thirty cars. Cans of Sapporo strewn on the ground, so at least we’re dealing with upscale litterbugs. Trailhead named after John F Kennedy, but hopefully the hike will work out better for you. There is a ruin of what may have been a pen for livestock, with remnants of a burnt door. Along the trail are varying exercise machines, on top of rubberized matting. Birdhouses dot the clearings to the side. A sign warns you not to disturb “geologic formations,” so careful when walking lest you scatter some pebbles.
