One of the best places in the area to go walking if you’re a dog owner, Bear Mountain Reservation has a system of trails on light hills next to Candlewood Lake.
The longest of these is the looping red trail, twisting through open fields and peaceful forest.
On this route you’ll come to a junction with the orange trail, which drops down the rather precipitous slope to Candlwood Lake if you need to work those calves.
South of the property is FCI Danbury, a low-security federal prison, mainly for female inmates.

On Sunday January 8, in broad daylight, around 3:00 in the afternoon, at least 3 cars were broken into in a smash-and-grab style theft, and robbed of their contents while people were hiking in the park. Each of the cars had a side window completely smashed in (I mean, gone) and purses, cellphones, and house keys taken. So, we did what friends do - we went to a drive-thru coffee shop and took our beverages to the reservation. We never got as far as the hiking trail; we sat at one of the picnic tables next to the parking lot and talked, gabbed, chatted, etc. Before we knew it, 2 hours had passed.
