A little off the beaten path, Douglass Falls is just outside of Thomas, West Virginia. After a short ride, you’ll have to finish the trip on foot to the top of the access point. It’s there, you’ll have to climb down these rocks. So, use extreme caution, because these can be slick. At the bottom, you’re granted amazing views of this billowing waterfall — a lot of rain this week really added to the intensity of the cascade. Very cool spot hidden spot in Canaan Valley. #wv #westvirginia #waterfall #almostheaven

Tucked away in Thomas, WV, Douglas Falls is a hidden gem. This stunning cascade flows over vibrant orange rocks, a result of the area’s mining history, creating a striking contrast with the beautiful waterfall. If you’re exploring the Blackwater Falls area, don’t miss this lesser-known spot! Have you been to Douglas Falls? Let me know your favorite hidden waterfalls! #wvtourism #waterfallwednesday #WestVirginia #waterfalls #hiking

Just 3 hours drive from the DMV, this is hands down my favorite part of West Virginia! It’s beautiful, it’s FULL of outdoor adventures, and it’s SO underrated. My recommendations for the perfect summer road trip are focused in and around Davis, but just a heads up the drive between places can be up to an hour because there aren’t many roads! ALL of this info + tons more are on my blog (Epic Weekend Road Trip Itinerary: Dolly Sods, WV) 👉🏼Which activity looks the most fun to you!? [📌SAVE for planning + tag your adventure pals!] 1. Hike in Dolly Sods Wilderness- one of the most unique areas in the country. I love the Red Creek Trail for all the waterfalls 2. See the sunrise at Bear Rocks Preserve- right at the northern entrance to Dolly Sods, no hiking required! 3. Hike Chimney Top via North Fork Mountain Trail- my favorite hike in WV, though a challenge for sure! 4. Visit Blackwater Falls State Park. Some must-see spots are: -Blackwater Falls (short hike) -Elakala Falls (short hike) -Pendleton point (no hiking) -Lindy Point (short hike) 5. Check out Douglas Falls- down a 4x4 road just outside the state park (continue on to Kennedy Falls) 6. Hike to the top of Seneca Rocks- OR, go climbing! Did you spot the climbers in the video? 7. Stay at Harman’s Log Cabins! We love this property and the all the opps to explore. @wvlogcabins 8. From Harman’s, hike into the National Forest for the coolest swimming hole… 9. Or just walk outside your cabin and plop a tube in the river! Peep @happilyeverexploring & @mindyonthemove who I’ve had to pleasure of adventuring here with! 🙋🏻‍♀️ ⛔️Please help preserve the beauty of WV by staying on established trails, disposing of all waste (even food scraps), respecting wildlife, and leaving what you find. Based in Tucker County, WV, I would say this is one of the best kept secrets. Not a large waterfall but very very lovable.

Kids(and adults) can get into this clean water. Good place for enjoyment and photography.

Throughout the way (during the last part), there are boards elaborating the history and other details of the place. After the car parking (place available for about 10 cars), walk to the end (to the gate of a private property while keeping left at the fork). Access to the foot of the waterfalls is a bit hard for the kids (and the pets) but with some adult help it's not impossible. For the return, one can use the rope to climb up. Some places around to explore also, once you get down.

There are no restrooms available here.

Google map directions are apt. Last part of the drive is complete country road (no tar) but it is well set mud road.

It's not a crowded place and if you are in this part of the world and want to spend some quality family time together, this place is...

EDIT: After seeing reviews showing people in the water... DO NOT GET IN THIS WATER! IT IS ABSOLUTELY TOXIC! The signs along the road leading up to this even explain how polluted the river is. Please don't expose yourself to the risk of dangerous levels of mercury, lead, arsenic, etc.

Absolutely beautiful waterfall. Unfortunately the river is also absolutely dead. The water (and rocks) are heavily discolored and polluted by acid mine drainage. You should not get in this water, even briefly. The only thing living in this water is extrenophile bacteria and algae.

This stop was a stark reminder of the lasting damage humans have brought upon this landscape.

Rough road getting there. Not for low...

If you haven’t added Douglas Falls to your bucket list yet, you’re completely missing out. Photos cannot do this place justice. If you’re needing an afternoon full of sunshine, peace and quiet, and waterfall mist, I highly recommend you make a pit stop here. This is one of my favorite places to take my clients for an adventure session with a waterfall, it’s super easy to see why! 😁

The drive coming in is very bumpy, so be prepared to ride in something with clearance. Small cars can still get through, just drive very slowly. You’re able to pull right up to the falls and park.

It is a short climb to get down, it’s almost always slippery and can be muddy. Definitely use...
