Dayton State Park is a lovely little park with a historic background surrounding silver mining in the area. There are only 10 campsites and until Covid-19 hit, you could almost always find a spot. That’s no guarantee now but I suspect visitation will subside over winter with no hookups at the park. It does get quite cold here in the winter.

The sites are gravel and largely level. The first half of the loop is more tent-friendly sized spaces and the latter half have a bit more room for larger rigs. They are all surrounded by majestic cottonwoods that are utterly glorious in the fall. The tree cover is great for summer shade but a challenge if you’re managing a solar setup. There are some sites that are less shaded to offset that, though. There’s central water, flush toilets, and trash receptacles.

The dump station is open intermittently and I’ve yet to understand the pattern to when it is and isn’t. There are two free dump stations I’m aware of in Carson City, though -- at the Maverik (at Hwy 50 and College Ave.) and the new Golden Gate (at College Ave. and Retail Dr.)

The park is split by Hwy 50 with the stamp mill ruins on the west side and the campground and restrooms on the east side. There is a foot tunnel connecting the two bits but it’s a bit dicey from a safety standpoint so I’d recommend strolling to the aboveground crosswalk a little down the road.

Dayton State Park is a sweet little place full of potential but largely unloved and overlooked. As a former Dayton resident, I’ve gotten to witness the park’s challenges over time. In talking with the park supervisor about it, she acknowledged Dayton has its struggles, sometimes involving crime, and that the Nevada park system is underfunded and understaffed like most public lands departments. I’ve not had any issues when staying there but have witnessed some questionable activity in the day use area.

It seems the tide is turning as locals have begun to reclaim it in recent months and have been putting in substantial volunteer time to freshen it up and give it the love it deserves. I’m hopeful that effort will help Dayton SP become a destination instead of just a place to stop over for the night. We’re looking forward to joining in after our post-full-timer lives once we get our house built nearby.

A note about fires: this is a volatile wildfire area so charcoal fires and smoking outdoors are often banned much of the year. Don’t count on being able to grill in any Nevada State Park during fire seasons. Have a backup plan or support some of the local business in my little town -- Js’ Oldtown Bistro on Main Street is absolutely wonderful. It’s my absolute favorite restaurant but since it's off the main drag (US 50), you might not notice it. And for scrumptious tamales and other Mexican fare, The Lady Tamales is right by the park. The Pizza Factory has also delivered to us in the park if you’re looking for your dinner to...

Clean, Convenient, but Highway Noise Drove Us Elsewhere

Last Friday (May 2, 2025) we crossed the Sierra and aimed to overnight at Dayton State Park, right off US-50 in Dayton, NV. The small, 160-acre park looked tidy on arrival—cottonwoods along the Carson River, well-kept roads, and ten level sites that can fit rigs up to 34 feet. Each spot has a picnic table and barbecue, and there’s a handy dump station plus flush restrooms. Camping is a reasonable $15 per NV vehicle ($20 for non-residents), and the seven-day limit in a 30-day period is generous enough for a longer visit.

Unfortunately, the park sits just a few paces from the “Loneliest Road in America,” and the traffic noise never lets up. After listening for about 15 minutes, we decided the constant rumble would make for a restless night and moved on to a quieter campground. It’s a shame, because the grounds themselves are clean, open year-round, and the cottonwood shade would be pleasant in the hotter months.

If road noise doesn’t bother you, or you simply need an easy in-and-out stop with hookups nearby, Dayton State Park could work fine. For light sleepers looking for a desert escape, be prepared with earplugs or plan to explore during the day and...

So even before you check out and have already paid your reservation for all 4 days in full online, you can get harassed by a state parks official cause “they need proof you’re there” even when you’ve been sleeping there in the tent, car parked there overnight EVERY NIGHT!

The guy threatened in the future they would confiscate my stuff if I don’t “leave a note” despite my spot being PAID FOR and NAME WRITTEN DOWN on the spot for those specific days it was there, and NOT leaving it there AFTER check out day. Real nice to know.

The bathroom being a far walk, no showers, and loud road noise are one thing, but this is the tip of the iceberg and sealed the deal on why I will absolutely NOT be camping here ever again!

I STRONGLY don’t recommend this place, even with the low price to my worst enemy!

You may lose your stuff because park officials drove by when you were somewhere else and didn’t leave an extra note saying...

We stopped by this park in July 2025. We were exploring in the area and thought it would be a good base Camp to use to check out things in the area. We have the annual Nevada state parks camping all access pass. So the site was free other than the five dollar reservation fee. It was good for what we needed, but I would say this park needs some maintenance. It looks overgrown. The trail on the other side of the highway going to the old Mill is very overgrown and hard to get through. There aren’t very many sites. Just 10 in total. The bathrooms are a bit sad. Unfortunately, the dump station was closed. And we could find absolutely not one dumpster in the whole campgrounds. Just one trashcan over by one of the trails. I would say this wasn’t exactly our favorite state park. We visited so far using the all access pass, but it fit the bill for what we needed for a few days. Good that it’s here at least.

This park could use a little TLC and some funding to adjust to how the landscape has changed due to funding. The bathroom was clean (albeit quite dim) and the group use pavilion was nice. It was quite a challenge to find the trail I saw mentioned on some signs near the bathroom. It wasn't marked and the area has quite a lot of brush making it challenging to spot. Verdant with lots of trees and in just a few minutes of walking around I saw many birds, ground squirrels, and lizards. I walked a little way down the paved authorized access route but I never could see the river. Scenic and would be nice for a picnic or a little rest. There was another area with older picnic tables near the group use area but it was pretty overgrown/weedy.
