It's a family-friendly park with beautiful views around the entire lake. There's a small beach for kids and families to swim at, multiple spots to grill at without being directly on the trail, but not out in the woods. There's a playground, paddleboard rentals, and multiple picnic spots to host family get-togethers with a large amount of space to let the kids run around and have fun. They've added additional bike trails that connect you to local restaurants, bars, downtown DSM, Waterworks Park, West Des Moines, Norwalk, and pretty much anywhere you could imagine in Iowa. It's the perfect place to get a good, quick workout at and feel safe while doing it. You'll see people rollerblading, biking, speed walking, etc. There is a vast diversity of people finding healthy ways to exercise, and I absolutely love it. The expansion and development work around the area is forever growing, in the best way possible. I'm grateful that the City of Des Moines has continued to put the time, effort, and money into Gray's Lake and to make it into a beautiful place for all to enjoy and embrace. Gray's Lake has become the staple place for people on the Southside to focus on their health and well-being (mental and physical health). Whether you live in town or are visiting, you'll love your time checking out the scenery and taking in all the beauty that Gray's Lake has to offer.

Gray's lake is one of my favorite spots. I usually like more wooded trails, but I find the long path around the lake more than makes up for it. I wish the park was open later because I think it's a different experience after dark. I love seeing the lights reflect off the water, and the colored lights on the bridge are much more fun. I like the small beach area and dock. It has all the basic amenities I appreciate - water fountains and restrooms, these ones have been especially clean. There's also a boat rental and concession stand. Sadly no dogs allowed in the boats, so haven't checked it out. There have always been a decent amount of people here, more so than any other park I've been too. It's large enough though it never feels too crowded. Good for teaching my dog not every human needs to pet her - but some are very sweet and have asked to :)

It's a very pleasant walk around the lake. The path is paved, so it is used by pedestrians, bicyclists, and skaters. Most people are polite; cyclists let you know of their approach if you are walking. If there doesn't seem to be a place to park, drive around the lake a little farther. There are also restrooms in a couple of different places, There's a swim beach, and a boat rental that offers kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, paddle boards, and one sailboat-a small Hobie catamaran. There is a sign that explains the local bird life along the path. In another place there is a sign that explains how the lake and park came into existence. You can also explore the other side west of the lake because of the tunnel under the street.

Gray's Lake Park is one of the reasons the Des Moines area is a great place to live. Its beauty, accessible hiking and biking trails, and many other amenities are first-class. You can even rent a small boat and buy a snack at the concessions. There are many different parks throughout its many neighborhoods. The Bike trails connect to both suburbs and distant towns, creating opportunities for day-long excursions to ice cream shops, Freedom Rocks, and many other activities. If you enjoy modern apartment living with bars and shops nearby or ethnic neighborhood communities, Des Moines offers one of the most diverse places in the Midwest. However, parks like this make it unique.

We visited this lovely park on a Sunday afternoon and really enjoyed it. We drove around most of the lake to get a good view of everything and during which there was a marathon or 5K going on which was cool to see. We ended up parking on the south and north side of the lake to look around. On the north side, we walked over the Coleman Bridge and got to see ducks and geese in the water. It was a very clean park and had a good amount of people out and about. There is also part of the walkway (a path goes all the way around the lake) where you can walk over part of the lake on the south side. It is a really nice, beautiful, and peaceful area for sure!
