Visited this bayside community for the first time yesterday after reading a few random articles about it. I didn’t do extensive research before going, so I was a little taken back by how desolate and run down most of the houses are. I also didn’t expect to see hundreds of horseshoe crabs in the water, learned that this town is one of the main breeding grounds for the endangered species. The day was cloudy so despite how beautiful the bay was, didn’t get to enjoy the views. I would like to visit again on a sunny day now knowing the history of the town and what to expect. The greenheads are brutal so I will be bringing lots of bug spray and citronella candles next time. Does anyone know if the water is safe to swim in? Read moreStunning scenery. Go all the way to the end of New Jersey Ave to get to the Egg Island Beach area. Mussels and tide pools and sea glass and horseshoe crabs. It has it all and it’s beautiful. Fisherman go to fish off the beach. Kids can play in the sand. If you find a horseshoe crab flipped over and struggling - help it by flipping it back over. Flip it by the side of its shell, not its tail! It’s tail is easily damaged. The bay shore is one of a few places that these living fossils appear to lays their eggs during the season. But when I got out to open the trunk of my van to get out the bug spray, about 6-8 greenheads flew into the van. That is when all four of my kids went ballistic!
