Up there at the monument you can see for Mike's down the river. You see downtown Dubuque and you can see all of the boats going up and down the river. You can reach the monument by hiking from the catfish Creek foot trail lot or by simply driving up there. I would always recommend the hike. It is about a quarter mile without much incline. If you choose to visit in the winter you will have no choice other than to hike as the road up there gets closed in the winter. There are benches and visitor information and makes a great place for a picnic. One thing I was disappointed about is the fact that you cannot go up into the monument itself. There is a little memorial inside but the door is barred off. If you want an amazing view and a fun little hike. The Julien of Dubuque is the...

There are some really great views of the Mississippi from here. You can park at the lower parking area and walk up (20-30 mins with stops) OR you can park at the upper area and have a very short walk of only about a few minutes. If you park at the upper area I believe it is an accessible path to the tower and lookout. There is a picnic area off to the side. You'll of course see incredible views of the Mississippi. There are a couple of those things you can look through that are free of charge. This is definitely a...

This a really beautiful location overlooking the river with a lot of a history this structure is actually a grave. The entire Mines of Spain park is a great place to spend a day or two. Lots of interesting landscape which is in short supply in the midwest. This area feels like somewhere else. This makes a good last stop after you have been hiking in the park since it's an easy walk and really beautiful...

Julien Dubuque Monument is within the Mines of Spain national park in Dubuque Iowa. There is not a lot of parking, but we had no trouble on a Sunday morning, as no one else was there. :) Short walk to the monument and beautiful views of the Mississippi River. From that point, you can see Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. There are a lot of historical signage, with information about Julien Dubuque.

this is truly an amazing sight to see! at first I went here just thinking it was a random castle in town with no big meaning but on the other side you can actually see a grave for Julien. did a little reading and research and figured out this was a huge meaningful place to see! the look over the water is beautiful as well! drove 3 hours to see this and it was worth it!!
