This local favorite is one of the best urban trails anywhere. Right in the middle of the Hillside Neighborhood, Chester Creek drops over numerous cascades, chutes, and falls with a pair of hiking trails on either side. The gravel and clay trail is meticulously maintained but still has rocks and roots to watch out for.
For the most part, the trail runs directly on the water's edge, although the trail sometimes runs high above the water as the creek cuts through a few gorges. Near the 8th Street bridge, the gorge is deep and the trail is very high above the water.
Every season brings new sights. Spring gives a lengthy rushing waterfall display, while in summer, it is a cool shady place to visit. Fall offers colors and then the gradual formation of icy falls. Wintertime is quiet and peaceful with plenty of traffic to keep a packed trail.
Its the place to go in almost every type of weather event. In extreme wind, the creek is sheltered; in wet weather, it drains better than any trail; in heat, it is the coolest trail around; after winter storms, it has the best snow scenery; after a deluge of rain, it has the best falls.
