We walked to the monument from a nearby house along the narrow curvy road leading up to the entrance . Watch for cars if walking or biking there. From there a moderately steep driveway leads up through shady woods to the parking area. A ranger on duty let us know that there were small monoculars on a desk inside the base that we could take up to the top with us. A flight of stone steps led us to the entrance to the tall granite tower. A wrought iron spiral staircase wound upward in a tight corkscrew, enclosed in a metal grating for safety. After 145 steps, with no resting area, we arrived at a small circular landing inside the top. The youngest kids and the most out of shape adults in our group were winded, likely from singing "Great Green Gobs..." during the ascent (excellent echo). From the top four small narrow windows look over Duxbury Bay and the adjacent coastline. After peering though them for a while we made our descent, squeezing past a few other climbers on their way up. Outside we wandered around the surrounding lawns, and examined the name of all the counties of Massachusettes engraved around the base. A nice way to spend an hour or so, and kids enjoy the adventure of the climb. Not for toddlers or those who would fail a...
Read moreI worked a summer.job for the Commonwealth one summer at Myles Standish Monument. I had never heard of it before, but it was actually a quiet, nice place to be. There were two of us, and we shared the work week. We were both working weekends; our off days were staggered during the week. Before we opened to the public, a winter's full of pigeon guano had to be scraped and removed from the lookout at the top NOT PLEASANT.
But the park area was small, the weather was nice, and the 10-6 hrs were "summer convenient."
I was.amazed by the travelers that arrived from around the country nearly every day. I realized that since it was on the map as an historical place to visit, "people would come" - as the quote says. And they did!
On clear crisp days, you could see the Provincetown Monument. But, the views from the top were really nice every day, even when storm clouds were coming.
Now, looking back, I wish I had stayed late a few nights to see a spectacular sunset from the top. But then, as a college kid, the sooner to get out and see...
Read moreMyles Standish was on the Mayflower, and was hired by the pilgrims to be their Military leader.
I know BU recently removed the name of the Standish dorm rooms, because of Standish’s brutality in war and role in the ruined relations with local tribes.
Standish is a massive player in American history, and not without fault, but also not without merit.
I wish we had a statue to Massasoit’s son, Metacomet here. Both were military men, and both deserve to be remembered.
No way I can climb the steps to the statue, let alone the 125 steps to the top of it, but it is quite a statue.
Plenty of parking, and there was a ranger here too to...
