We had a wonderful time kayaking here. I'm a wheelchair user and the boat launch is quite steep but if you look to the right, there's a narrow trail that leads down to the water and has the perfect grade to get down in a controlled manner. There's also a handicap parking spot right by the boat launch. They only allow electric motors, so we had no problems with obnoxious speed boaters, just quiet fishermen. There's a small island in the middle of the lake that was loaded with birds, mostly Canadian geese. On the far side of the lake, I found a massive snapping turtle surrounded by dozens of painted turtles. To the right side, there's a shallow opening where the creek feeds the lake. We ventured down it, around many downed trees, even scooting our kayaks over one to get to the dam that created the stream. There were dozens of huge fish there, too! I tried to capture them on camera but was largely unsuccessful. A couple of fishermen on a larger boat got as close as they could, but the big ones were right up close to the dam, far out of reach of anyone not in a kayak. Even a canoe would be too wide to get through.

10/10, we...

QUIET and TIMELESS A surprising pocket of woodland scenery and serenity (nestled in central Iowa). It offers a compact, yet complete escape. The landscape is naturally beautiful

The park’s character is a rugged blend of ravines and river bluffs. A well-maintained trail system lends itself to leisurely strolls, rugged hikes and scenic overlooks.

Historic stone-and-timber structures built in the early 1900s seamlessly blend into their natural surroundings.

The park’s river and lake run through the heart of this place. Consider them a haven for anglers, paddlers, and kayakers. There's also a sandy beach on the lake for summer swimming.

Accommodations include a modern campground or the iconic, year-round cabins (complete with fireplaces and modern amenities).

This place is a quiet and...

We really enjoyed this place. The hosts were so kind and helpful! We're new to camper life, and the host (I believe his name was randy?! Forgive me if I am wrong!) Helped my dude backup the camper into the spot and handled that part of it which was amazing.. he said that him and his wife had been there before and it can be a frustrating process, he really saved the day! They helped us understand some important tips and tricks with the camper and helped feel comfortable, capable, and confident with our camper! We stayed for 3 nights and left the fourth day and each day was a literal breath of fresh air. It's a little far from any town but that's what we...

I think this park is nice, and I like the location between Waterloo and Des Moines. However, the directions and signs we could find took us to the golf course, and most of our time was spent there. While well maintained and pretty, and probably great if you want to golf, that was not what we were looking for. It wasn't until we left we drove by the actual park, and I was a bit disappointed we couldn't find it earlier. I hope they get better signs or someone updates Google maps.
