As someone with a deep interest in museums that celebrate the immigrant cultures that shaped America, I made the deliberate trip to visit this Danish heritage museum—and I'm so glad I did. This impressive facility spans three full levels, each packed with authentic Danish treasures and stories. From comprehensive exhibits on Danish history and the immigrant experience to exquisite displays of Denmark's famous china and other cultural exports, the museum offers a thorough immersion into Danish heritage. Every floor reveals new aspects of how Danish culture has influenced and been preserved in America. What struck me most was the attention to detail throughout the museum. The curators have clearly put tremendous care into presenting both the historical narrative of Danish immigration and the ongoing cultural traditions that continue today. Whether you're interested in genealogy, craftsmanship, or simply learning about a culture that may be new to you, there's something meaningful to discover here. The exterior grounds deserve special mention—the gardens and walkways are beautifully designed to complement the Midwest landscape while maintaining an authentic Danish aesthetic. It's a peaceful setting that enhances the overall experience. Yes, this museum requires going somewhat out of your way, but that's precisely what makes it special. Unlike crowded urban museums, this feels like discovering a genuine cultural treasure. Plan to spend at least 2-3 hours here to fully appreciate what's on offer. Highly recommended for anyone interested in immigrant heritage, Danish culture, or simply discovering one of America's well-preserved...
Read moreWe planned our traveling this year so that we would be able to visit the museum. It was marvelous in every way. The family history archives (temporarily located downtown) was like finding hidden treasure. Michelle is a wonderful resource, with a gracious, helpful spirit.
In half an hour she helped me find my grandfather, Jacob Christoffersen, in his village in Denmark, passage to the US, date of arrival in Clear Lake, Iowa, ... his parents and siblings, his mother's family in Denmark, occupations, baptisms, locations. I could have fainted!
I now have access to the databases--just hope I can remember my password and all the tricks she showed me. I really look forward to building authentication of the tree I've started.
I also very much appreciated the special exhibit on Danish Jews and the German Occupation. My grandfather's family back in Denmark was occupied--German soldiers lived in the farm house while the family lived in the barn for several years. Cousins had to cut short university educations in London under threat of something bad happening to their family if they didn't return to Denmark.
Best wishes to everyone there. You've created something very special. We stayed (twice) at the Tivoli Inn, and ate at the Danish Inn and the little cafe twice also. We stopped in Clear Lake...I can imagine my grandpa stepping off the train with two of his buddies in 1902.
Wonderful adventure on our long drive...
Read moreMy husband and I were just passing through the area on our way home, and we stopped here to have lunch outside. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the green roof and wetland area are great examples of what we should be doing more of in the Midwest.
As a casual fan of Scandinavian design, I couldn't get back on the road without also seeing the gift shop! It's not huge, but has a good variety of items for all ages, with lots of cool books, needlecraft, and innovative kitchen gadgets.
I was impressed not only by the timber construction of the building itself, but also by the layout and the cleanliness of the areas we saw. The two individuals at the desk were also so friendly and accommodating!
We were so impressed by the small portion we witnessed. We both look forward to visiting again and actually experiencing the...
