My husband and I did the Big Dig Excavator this past Friday, and we had the best time. Our instructor, Phil, did a great job of walking us through the info we needed to stay safe and then coaching us through the controls for each of the tasks we were doing.

There was one other person doing the same tour at the same time as us, but they paired him with a different instructor so my husband and I were only interacting with each other. I am not sure what the maximum number of participants is for any one tour.

We were there for about an hour and a half. When we got there, the staff helped us put on orange safety vests. These were super loose-fitting and open at the front, so we had no issue with sizing. We're both pretty large people, so the vests should be accessible for many shapes and sizes of people.

After that, we watched a short video with safety instructions, and then Phil showed us what we would be doing using small toy excavators and safety cones in a sandbox. The whole introduction probably took 10-15 minutes.

We went outside, and Phil gave us headsets that we would wear until we were done working with the machines. My husband's and my headsets were on one channel with Phil; the other person who was doing the tour was on a separate channel with his instructor, and we never heard them.

Phil got us into the machines and helped position our seats, then explained which controls were which and how to change the air conditioning/climate control for the cab. The weather was sunny and in the mid- to low 80s when we were there, but the cab was completely comfortable.

Also, getting into the machine is not very difficult. You can climb up, or they have a set of stairs they can pull out to make getting in and out easier. My husband has a bad back, and he climbed into the cab without needing the stairs.

We spent the next hour following Phil's instructions to complete different movements and tasks. He was very patient, easygoing, and friendly with us, and he was quick with suggestions or corrections so we avoided any damaging mistakes or moments of confusion. By the end of the tour, we felt pretty accomplished given that this was totally new to us.

I ordered the plaque and the digital photos during the check-in process, because I knew I would want those later, and I am glad I sprang for them. Phil took photos of us throughout the tour, and I'm so glad we have those. We also had our cell phones with us and took a few pics and video of each other, but we were also pretty distracted with our own machines most of the time. I appreciated having the backup from Phil and knowing that I would have pictures whether I personally took some or not.

I would happily go back for another tour on another machine, or maybe to trash a car in the excavator next time. The tour was not the cheapest part of our Vegas vacation by any means, but it was an extraordinary experience and well worth the cost of admission. After all, how many opportunities do you get to play around in heavy...

TLDR: A fun activity ruined by rude staff.

The receptionist was very rude and cold upon arrival, right off the bat. She accused us of ignoring her messages, as we apparently "did not respond to any of her 6 to 7 messages trying to confirm the exact number of people in our group". I apologized immediately for several times (I didn't think I received any communication from them but I wasn't sure), but she ignored my apologies and continued to be cold and unwelcoming. Our group felt very bad and nervous right from the beginning.

Turns out, THEY TYPED MY EMAIL ADDRESS INCORRECTLY the whole time. I had put my email correctly in my booking and they made a mistake when sending emails to me, which is why we did not receive any communication from them.

The staff did realize the mistake themselves after a while and let me know about it, but only provided a short half-hearted apology and immediately turned away to tend to other matters. But our group's mood was already affected.

When I booked the experience online, they only give the option to choose from ranges (e.g. "4-8 people" or "5-10 people") and do not ask anywhere else in the form to specify the exact number of people. I had also clearly specified that we can be reached via email (and Whatsapp). But I did not receive any email from them to confirm the exact number of people in our group, which was why we were surprised that we were guilt tripped for that.

Our group arrived 5-10 minutes earlier than the scheduled time - we were supposed to meet 15 minutes early, I don't know if being a few minutes late to the "meeting time" contributed to her bad temper, and I also apologised several times for that, but she didn't mention anything about that being an issue at all, and only grilled us for not responding to her question of exactly how many people are in our group.

The rude staff aside, the experience is fun and we had fantastic instructors Tom and Carlson. I would recommend this experience but they need to provide better training to their staff. If you want to be rude and cold to your customers, sure go ahead by all means, but maybe double check that it wasn't your own stupid mistake that...

My friend and I booked this experience for a trip to Las Vegas. She flew in from Richmond, VA, and we drove there from Prescott, AZ. I booked about a month in advance and it was nice that I could include the gratuity at the time of booking. P.S. it is cheaper if you book directly through them. I was able to pick a time that worked around our schedule. I chose the excavators, because they looked more challenging to me. On our way there the day of we got a flat tire 15 minutes out. As the fee is non-refundable, the first thing I did was call them to let them know the situation, and that we would be there ASAP. They were very empathetic to our situation. They called me back a few minutes latter and gave me the option of having a shortened session that day or rescheduling for the morning. I chose to reschedule and was so relieved that I could just deal with this issue and still enjoy the whole experience. There isn't much to the office, but it is clean and the staff are friendly. Our instructor was Tiny, and he is a super nice guy. After a safety brief and a pre-operational rundown on the sand table. We headed out to the construction yard. Again, Tiny was very patient and helped is get into the equipment safely. Once we were comfortable, the fun began. Tiny walked us through the how to's and showed an amazing talent for instruction while doing everything backwards in his head. He always had our safety in mind, but kept it light hearted with a healthy influx of Dad jokes and ribbing. Once we would get the hang of a task he let us continue on our own, but with a watchful eye for our best interest. The excavators are extremely easy and smooth to operate. Driving them is quite noisy, and a little bumpy, but that makes it exhilarating and fun. We had a great time, and it was well worth the money. My friend and I are both in our 40's, but I could tell that the little kids were having a blast on the smaller equipment, too. In fact, I was little...
