Immaculately beautiful well-kempt & maintained park with easy access to an amazing view.
There's restrooms near the parking lot, clean well maintained coverd picnic areas with a large luscious open grassy areas for activities, a large well maintained playground for kids & a beautiful view of the surrounding forests, as well as nearby viewpoints where you can look out over the valleys. A park &/or forrest ranger always seemed to be within sight, & there were maintenance & cleaning crews throughout the park ensuring everything was safe & clean. After packing up, there was already a maintenance crew sanitizing the area we had use for whoever might want to use it next before we even started pulling out. I've rarely seen such a well maintained park. We plan to stop by there again the next time we go up to the mountains 😁👍
Trails: I'd've loved to go on the trails, but I'm not sure how safe they are for children. Although the park part seems very safe, & the trails are far from the play area (maybe for good reason), you should still be sure to watch your kids & teens closely to make sure they don't wander off on them alone. The entrance to the one we saw looked as though it could be treacherous, so I can't say for sure how safe they are. Rangers were entering & exiting them quite often which I imagine was to ensure they're safe &/or offer assistance to people walking on them. Judging by the state of the park we saw, I'd say the trails may be fairly safe, & if not they will probably be marked as such. Just keep in mind, they're still mountain trails, some of which may lead into the wilderness, I would just suggest using good judgment when...
Read moreStarted at the Mud Mountain - Rim Trail did the Bog Loop of the trail before it came back to the Rim Trail which then met with the River Trail. When hiking the Rim Trail before getting to where it meets with the River Trail there were some down trees/limbs that it looked like had been there only a few days prior to me showing up and/or were being taken down, as once I got to where the River and Rim Trail meet there were big construction equipment there. The River Trail is mainly a maintenance road and it has a steep hill(s) that you need to be prepared to come back up. At the start of the trail it does have signs showing where you are at and where you can go, which shows you can go through Scatter Creek all the way out to a fish release site. One piece of information that I found here and was mentioned on the bulletin board was that YES the Scatter Creek part of the River trail is impassible. I walked all the way to it to see what might be the cause to be able to share that, but once I got there I could not really find a reason other than I did not know where the other side of the trail was, even though the creek was bone dry, as I am doing this hike at the end of the summer (9/11/2022) and the weather is descent.
The trails are dog friendly. My dog enjoyed the walk in the woods and she is only 25lbs, and did the 3.5+miles out and back. On the way back I did he the other part of the Rim Trail. Based on what I could hike I did about 7.6 miles all in total with all the different parts of the Rim, Bog, and River...
Read moreThis is a fun park for the kids. Two different playgrounds, both have climbing structures and baby swings. The larger side has at least two big play pieces, plus big kid swings too. Both are in full sun so on hot days the equipment gets really hot by midmorning. There are tons of covered and shaded picnic tables and pavilions. Two sets of nice bathrooms, although one set was closed the day we went. The smaller playground has gravel which isnt as great, kinda gets in the kids shoes but the bigger side has normal wood chips. There is a wading pool water feature which looks really fun but also the day we went... we waited 3 hours for them to turn it on and then it was broken... so maybe dont count on that if you are making a long trip. We also checked out the Vista trail down to the dam viewing deck. It is steep but my 2 and 4 year olds did fine with a bit of watching. The trail is short and switchbacks down the hill. There is a fence but there are a few spots washed out under the fence where a small child could technically slip through, but it's not a huge deal if you are...
