This easy walk is a long drive to the ocean in Western Marin County. But, the drive is well worth it. In spring enjoy the many varieties of wild flowers. This year especially (2019) after a long and bountiful rainy season, we identified 35+ varieties in colors ranging from lavender to orange and all the colors in between. It is mostly flat with three options to increase your walk to 3+ miles.
(Option 1) Most of the wild flowers are on a single file trail out to the point. You can identify the start of this trail by the Flower I.D. board posted at the head of the trail. Single file is good. Take the time to stop and look. You will be rewarded. It might be windy and cool, but if there is no fog, you can stop at the end and look for migrating whales. Not wheelchair compatible.
The Lighthouse near here is being renovated, so the area can get crowded during peak times
Today we spotted a Pergrine Falcon, young elephant seals, deer and a coyote. Great place for a picnic lunch at the old Coast Guard Lifesaver station below the parking lot (option 2) Paved but too steep for wheelchairs. Check with the visitors center on that issue.

Chimney Rock Trail is an absolute gem and a must-visit if you're in the Point Reyes area.
The trail itself is relatively easy and well-maintained, making it accessible for most hikers, but the views along the way are nothing short of spectacular.
You're treated to sweeping vistas of the deep blue Pacific Ocean, rugged cliffs with interesting rock formations, and, if you’re lucky, some local wildlife like seals and seabirds.
The real highlight is reaching the overlook, where you can take in panoramic views that feel completely untouched and wild.
The wind can be intense, so bring a jacket, but it's all part of the experience.
Depending on the season (typically winter and spring), you might even catch the whale migration, which is unforgettable.
This is the kind of trail that reminds you why California’s coastline is so iconic—absolutely worth the trip. The trail is mostly flat with some gentle inclines, making it suitable for a wide range of fitness levels.

From the parking lot there’s a trail down to the lifeboat house or up to chimney rock.
Chimney rock is NBD. It’s a vista point to hike out to. The seals are what make this location unique and worth going down to observe some of the local’s customary behavior. Very interesting community creatures.
Pair the excursion with the latest release on Apple TV on elephant seals 🦭 “Big Beasts” S1,E2.
