Be aware that this beach is known for bad currents, and has had a recent death due to drowning. Respect the ocean. I wouldn't bring kids here as there are other nice beaches without the intense warnings. When we went, we fully prepared ourselves to not enter the water, but we were surprised to see most people wading in the shallow areas. Most of the people in the water appeared to be locals. There were even a few snorkelers further out at the reef (in my mind, this is highest risk activity at this beach). We entered the water, but only to about knee to thigh deep at a maximum. We felt safe staying in the shallow areas, but I wouldn't feel comfortable going any deeper due to the warnings. We felt zero current where we were, but maybe it was just a little further out or we went on a particularly calm day - who knows.
Follow all the guidance other reviewers have left regarding how to get there.
With all that being said, the beach was beautiful. Fine sand, clear water, and some shade along the treeline. The path to the beach was an easy 15 minute walk, but note there was 1 or 2 "challenging" portions where it was slippery and muddy. Many people carried coolers and beach chairs, so that should give you an idea of how...
Read moreWe parked at Seven Seas and then hiked the path to Playa Escondida (see instructions others have posted before to navigate the trail). The path was not muddy when we went, but it definitely has the potential to be wet and slippery when it rains. It wasn't a bad hike, but it's not wheelchair accessible and not likely recommended for those with any type of balance/walking issues.
The hike through the mangroves was beautiful. Take your time and enjoy the hike. Look for the little violin crabs by the mangrove trees, the huge hermit crabs on the trees, and the local birds. The hike IS a feature of going to this beach.
We went on Christmas day when other tourists were also visiting, so there were other people there we shared the beach with. We snorkled in the protected rock area and saw all kinds of small, tropical fish. We also walked to the two points and got some amazing views of waves breaking on the coast!
Good day trip for couples and families! Pack some food and water for your afternoon and a trash bag to haul your trash back out. Take an extra trash bag if you can to pick up litter on the trail on your way out to keep this hike and...
Read moreI'm almost afraid to review this place for fear of it becoming busier! This beach is a hidden gem. I randomly discovered it while researching what to do near our hotel while on vacation. It's a secluded beach that can only be reached by a 1+ mile hike (really more of a walk) through the woods. The walk alone was amazing, we found a hermit crab, saw a big group of crabs hanging out before they saw us and scurried into holes in the ground, and lots of other beautiful sights and sounds of nature.
Once we reached the beach there were a handful of people but few enough that we were maybe 20 feet from the closest couple. Signs warn that swimming is prohibited due to strong surf, but we found that we were able to wade out into the water up to our knees with no issues (your mileage may vary, proceed at your own risk). We spent a lovely quiet late morning and early afternoon there, though by the time we decided to leave for lunch a bit after 1:00 it was getting a tiny bit more crowded.
Definitely something we would like...
