We stayed at hawksnest lodge in early April 2023 right when the wind storm went through and there was no power. Check in was special and i think many people decided to cancel their stay. Luckily we were prepared to camp. We had a ton of flash lights and even our jetboil and ramen noodles for back up dinner. We were sad we couldn't try their resturant. We thought about leaving but were so tired from driving all day and visiting new river gorge NP. There were no lights or air conditioning or heat. There was running water but no hot water. It was luke warm and ran out after awhile.
Staff was super accommodating. Power did come on at 2AM. We got a discount on our room. We took nice hot showers before check out. Also with no elevator we had to lug all our stuff up the stair wells in the dark with headlamps on.
We did get complimentary breakfast in the morning which was great and tasted amazing. There was a waffle maker. They had sausage, egg, biscuit and gravy. Also had muffins and cerals and fruits and yogurt and juices. It was great for such a crazy night. The one sad thing was we never got to visit the gift shop. They were closed withoutbpower the day before and then the next day we left an hour before they were set to open. We'll have to come back one day to buy our sourviners.
We did do the cliff side trail. It was the most amazing trail with so much varried terrain. I think we underestimated how tough it would be. We are a scout family and practice Leave No Trace but we failed step 1... plan and prepare, know before you go. We left a little later in the afternoon/evening than we hoped and we decided not to switch to our hiking shoes/boots. It was very wet and parts it was water falling on youbor you were hiking through the pools or waters or falls. Very fun and kids enjoyed but we were not prepared. We also missed 1 trail sign and ended up going down the cliff to the fishermans trail and had to hike it all the way back up. The views were amazing both in front and behind us. Highly recommend this hike. Kist don't do it the way we did. We will always have those memories though. We ended up hiking back along side the road instead of taking the service road because it was getting dark and we were so tired going up and down the cluff side by accident. It was a little dangerous with 3 young kids but we did it anyways.
Overall we enjoyed our stay and the views from our room and the trail. We would probably donit again if we wanted to head to new river...
Read moreThe user wants me to help them write a review about visiting a mirador (which seems to be referring to a viewpoint or overlook) in West Virginia. They've provided some text that expresses their sentiment: "just stopped at the mirador, and it was breathtaking! Such a beautiful experience what West Virginia is known for; those amazing views. This is what you could call A Piece of heaven"
Looking at the search results, I can see references to West Virginia being "almost heaven" and information about scenic areas in West Virginia, particularly around the New River Gorge area. The search results mention that West Virginia is known for its beautiful terrain and views.
The user wants me to help them write a review, so I should take their basic sentiment and expand it into a more polished, detailed review while maintaining their enthusiasm and core message. I should focus on the scenic beauty and views that West Virginia is known for.
This appears to be a creative writing task where I'm helping them craft a review, so I shouldn't need to cite the search results heavily, but I can use the general information about West Virginia's reputation for beautiful scenery.
Just stopped at the mirador and I'm absolutely blown away! This experience perfectly captures everything West Virginia is celebrated for - those absolutely stunning, panoramic views that take your breath away.
Standing there overlooking the landscape, you truly understand why they call this state "almost heaven." The rolling mountains stretch endlessly into the distance, creating layers of green and blue that seem to go on forever. The natural beauty is simply overwhelming in the best possible way.
This viewpoint offers exactly what you hope for when visiting West Virginia - that perfect moment where you're surrounded by pristine wilderness and can truly appreciate the raw, untouched beauty of the Mountain State. The scenery is so spectacular it almost doesn't feel real.
If you're looking for those iconic West Virginia vistas that remind you why this place is so special, this mirador delivers in every way. It's one of those stops that makes you pause, breathe deeply, and feel grateful to witness such natural magnificence.
This truly is a piece of heaven on earth. Highly recommend taking the time to stop here - the views alone are worth the entire trip. West Virginia's reputation for breathtaking scenery is absolutely well-deserved, and this spot proves...
Read moreOn our way back from Fayette County Courthouse, we decided to stop at Hawks Nest State Park to either ride the jet boat or sky lift. Well, the decision was made for us: the sky lift is being renovated and work hasn't started on it, yet. So, jet boat ride it is.
In order to participate, you visit the front desk of lodge to buy tickets. You also have to fill out and sign a waiver. We got there just right. The shuttle to take us from the lodge to the jet boat was just about 10 minutes out. So back down the red brick path we went.
Kenneth, our driver, was very knowledgeable of the area and EEM reminisced on her youth and told a few stories as well. Some of those curves were a wee bit scary, but Kenneth manueverered beautifully. He did have to back up once because a big truck came up the road!!!
When we got there, Captain Rick took over. He dispersed us equally on the boat and we all had "window" seats so to say. We started out by running under the active train bridge from the pier to the damn and then back up river. The little fishing camps in the videos and pictures can only be reached by waterway. We also saw a group of kayakers and a party on a raft. I posted as many pictures and videos that I was allowed for you to get a feel of the ride. The day was absolutely perfect for this outing!!! 😁
After the ride, we had to wait about 15 minutes for shuttle pick up. A shame that the gift shop at the pier was closed, but we enjoyed the afternoon breeze and shade. Mr. Kenneth picked us up and brought us back to our starting point. It was exhilarating for me!
Of course, we had to browse the lodge gift shop afterwards. I picked up a book titled: "100 Things To Do In West Virginia Before You Die" by Melody Pittman and Angela Richards! You can be certain EEM and I will try to get in as many as we can!!! 😁 😀
This is a wonderful park to visit! It also has hiking trails for those of you who would rather walk and take in its beauty and...
