After taking the Hawks Nest jet boat ride and visiting the gift shop, substitute mom, EEM, and I decided we would indulge ourselves with dinner at their restaurant "The Overlook". We had dessert here once before and wanted to come back 😀. Usually you wait to be seated, but this day we could pick and choose our table. Of course, we picked a table at the windows. The view is absolutely stunning!!! Last time we even saw hawks!
Ms. Payton, our server, came right away with a beautiful smile. We were a little early for dinner, but she inquired with the chef if we could go ahead and order from the dinner menu. (Starts at 5p) We got the okay. Also, we decided instead of an appetizer, we would get an entrée and dessert.
Both of us needed a little perk me up and ordered coffee and water to drink. EEM chose the Fried Chicken Livers with sautéed onions and mushrooms. As her sides she picked mac & cheese and mashed potatoes with beef gravy. A dinner roll and side salad comes automatically with dinner. At first EEM thought she would not be able to consume it all. However, once she took her first bite of the chicken livers she was all gung ho!!! She said it was the most tender and moist chicken livers she ever ate!!! 😋
I went for the Asparagus Stuffed Chicken with a double veggie medley. It was so colorful and beautifully 😍 plated!!! The food is delicious 😋!!! The chicken moist and tender, veggies with a little bite to it, perfect!
In between Ms. Payton noticed that we were low on coffee and promptly asked if we would like refills. Of course! We both love coffee. While she went to get coffee we debated if we could even eat dessert. At first, we thought we could maybe share a cheese cake, but needed to know how large the slices were. Ms. Payton didn't hesitate and offered to show us a slice. The slice was just right for a little something something sweet. I kept the plain cheesecake and ordered for EEM another slice, but with strawberry drizzle. Talking about scrumptious!!! Yum, yum 😋!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and thought we were both stuffed bell peppers when we left. We highly recommend the...
Read moreWe came for a 7 pm dinner on Saturday May 11 after several of hours hiking in the New River Gorge National Park area. We did not stay in the lodge. The restaurant is within the Hawks Nest State Park Lodge. We were greeted by a breathtaking view overlooking the New River.
We were seated immediately at a window-side table. There were 4 other parties dining. Two servers were caring for the guests. Our beverages came out quickly. A few bottled beers available, nothing on tap. Our server was attentive and knew the menu, and what was currently available from the kitchen. We ordered the Ribeye Steak entree and Angus Cheeseburger with fries. The side salad was crisped, cold, and simple.
It took over 35 minutes to be served. The steak came out medium-rare as ordered. Seasoned well, but the beef itself lacked flavor and was not fork tender. The burger was good at medium, the fries good but not piping hot. There was a very relaxed, calm atmosphere here. Prices were average, and the view spectacular. The food was good but lacked special pizazz and fanfare.
On this visit, credit cards were not accepted. Cash or charged to the room only. When in the area for the first time, we recommend this experience for a special view. For those returning here, I recommend exploring other restaurants near the Gorge.
TRAVEL TIP - Phone directly ahead of time to confirm the hours of operation. With weather and Covid so unpredictable many of the places in the area close temporarily without much notice. Very friendly and...
Read moreTo be extremely generous, maybe we had a brand new server who has never had this type of job before AND maybe the downstairs part of the restaurant was packed. AND I can say that it’s a multi level restaurant and I ate on the second floor so all dishes and drinks had to be brought up in the elevator, which certainly adds difficulty. BUT, it took forever for the server to show up, when asked about gluten free food they recommended some buttered pasta, it took some time to bring the drinks and a couple of people did not get their drinks, when she came back with the missing drinks she still missed one person, she attempted to refill some water but only managed to refill half with her small jug, never refilled anything else. Food took over an hour to show up. I got the meatloaf and it was not enjoyable. I’m not a picky eater but I just nibbled on it and acted like I was full. It was honestly at a comical level how bad everything was. Hopefully it was just a one off. The view was...
