Nice visitors center but the displays inside are currently closed for public viewing (12/06/2021). The gift shop inside was open and we were able to talk to the rangers about the monument. We purchased a booklet detailing the highlights of the short Lava Trail for $1.50. If you are planning to walk the trail, you might consider purchasing it since it does point out a couple of features on the trail that you might overlook otherwise. We arrived at about 11:30 and found that the visitors center was closed for lunch but we ate our lunch in the parking lot and was then able to talk with the ranger afterwards. He showed us a red "lava bomb" on display outside of the visitors center. He was very knowledgeable about the "bomb" and the trails...

So beautiful and other worldly. Cool lava flows! Great hiking trails! Picturesque views! Sunset Crater has it all, except cell service, restaurants, and gas stations. But that's what you came for... uninterrupted wilderness. It heats up quick, so hike the trails early. It's a very picturesque drive to Wupatki and totally worth the extra jaunt to the ancient ruins. Be sure to bring all your own food and water as services are scarce, besides the basic gift shop fare at the visitor centers at both Sunset Crater and Wupatki. Make sure to stop at all the viewpoints, there are great picture opportunities everywhere. Oh, and it can get a little dusty when the winds pick up, so pack a couple of bandanas in case of dust ups if you're...

One of a handful of national parks and monuments in the area, I stopped in to see what was so neat about sunset crater. I was immediately greeted by a ranger and park volunteer that delighted me with so many cool factoids about the park, volcanoes, cultural history and wildlife in the area. What a treat! They were so welcoming and knowledgeable. On top of that, I ALMOST LOST MY PRECIOUS NATIONAL PARK PASSPORT AND THE AMAZING RANGERS AT SUNSET CRATER TRACKED ME DOWN ON THE TRAIL TO RETURN IT. I had left it by the stamp pad area in the visitor center and they were so kind to find me to give it back. My experiences here and walking the trails will never be forgotten, you should take some time to visit! Thank you sunset...

If you want to see a surprising number of different Arizona settings on a drive, this is the place! My husband and I were awestruck to be able to pass through ponderosa pine forest, lava flow fields, what resembled to be grassy plains then finished off with a glimpse of red rock mesas in our 35 mile long drive. Even more surprising is how close it all was to Flagstaff. We were able to complete the loop and still have time to head up to see the aspens up at Snow Bowl. It was a major part of a great day of scenic drives and the best part is we could enjoy the views either from our car or not too far off the road. Perfect for the days you want to get out but don't have lots of energy for a grueling hike.

Loved visiting this park. Park roads are open 24/7 and I got there at dawn and hiked the Lenox Crater trail during sunrise. It was amazing. Once the sun was up, I could fully appreciate the lava fields. The A'a trail was a nice, short, but not easy walk through one of the lava fields. Vistas within the park offered nice views of the mountains. A lot of the sights can be seen without venturing far from a parking lot or pull out. Lenox Crater trail has elevation gain made harder by the fact that you are starting at high elevation. The path itself was easy (unless there's snow or ice on the path). Enjoy the views along the way while you take some breaks.
