I was in the area picking up my vegetable box from a local farm when I noticed this very nice park so I stopped to check it out. Buttonwood Park is a 17 acre sports park with four basketball courts, 3 multi purpose fields, restrooms, 2 sand volleyball courts, a playground, and a large covered pavilion with grill that can be rented for parties. On the day I came by the park was crowded with a football game with bounce houses and a Kona Ice truck and a birthday party under the pavilion. Even with all of the hustle and bustle it was peaceful in the wetlands area where there are picnic tables set up. I saw a great blue heron, a green heron, and some common moorhens swimming among the pickerelweed. With the cold front that rolled in it was a beautiful day to enjoy the park.

It seemed like a nice park, although I will admit the truth, I was only walking by the park with my wife at 2AM after numerous cocktails while engaged in a conversation. A brief glance confirmed gates that prevent thru traffic after dark, a tennis court, water and grass. Oh yea, a sheriff’s deputy literally hidden w just the tiniest part of their car showing who was either A. Sleeping or B. Waiting on someone to cross that invisible line entering the park so they could pounce. That someone was almost me as halfway over the fence I spotted our friendly peace keeper itching to light me up. Nice park!!! Go visit!! If you want to reserve a pavilion be sure to read the 32 pages of rules and processes on the PBC website.

This park holds significant personal value to me, as it served as my primary recreational space during my formative years. I spent a considerable portion of my youth there, particularly around 2006, engaging in competitive basketball games. It was my go-to location for stress relief and meditation.

Basketball facilities are one of the best in Central Palm Beach County. The lights stay on until 9-10pm (times not officially listed) and there is plenty of benches to rest in between games. There is a lack of shade so players begin to arrive 4-5pm but it does get CROWDED & COMPETITIVE! The soccer/football fields during weekends are always packed and require permits for the larger more organized events. During late Feb-March the fields are roped off for at least 3 weeks , suspending their use by anyone (which seems a bit excessive) so an impulsive trip to the park to play a pick up game would be a waste of time. The picnic area and children's areas can be patrolled more often. At times unfriendly people can be seen sleeping on benches. Parking can be crazy during big events so get...
