Kayak or paddle from turtle beach down the canal to this preserve named after a Sarasota environmentalist. Very shallow! I could not find any “mangrove tunnels” - they said paddling around the island is a 1 mile loop. We saw black crowned heron eating a frog. Saw cormorants. Saw the old abandoned mote aquarium shark tanks. Saw a limpkin. Did not see any manatees. And we went to the “secret beach” then a storm got us! During the summer don’t expect any fishing! The water is so HOT! The fish leave! Except mullet - lots of jumping mullet!

Definitely a cool place to paddle, we started at turtle Beach. The actual portion that you can go into the mangroves is pretty overgrown and very limited but the surrounding area and the way in was nice, as was the Sandbar

Great park to explore on kayak paddle board or boat! Super beautiful beaches and nature near the beach. Great for a small day adventure. Parking was a bit difficult on busy times but truly beautiful location.
