Lory State Park stands as a remarkable testament to Colorado’s rich natural beauty and commitment to preserving open spaces for public enjoyment. Nestled against the backdrop of the iconic foothills, the park offers an expansive playground for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds—from hikers and mountain bikers to horseback riders and wildlife observers. The variety of trails and landscapes within the park creates a versatile environment where visitors can engage with nature on multiple levels, whether seeking a vigorous workout or a peaceful retreat.
The trail system at Lory is notably well-maintained and thoughtfully designed to accommodate different skill levels and interests. From challenging climbs that reward hikers with breathtaking panoramic views, to gentle paths ideal for casual strolls or family outings, there is a route for everyone. The integration of diverse ecosystems—from dense forests to open meadows—provides a rich habitat for local wildlife, enhancing the immersive experience for nature lovers and photographers alike.
Facilities within the park, including well-marked signage, picnic areas, and accessible restrooms, reflect a strong commitment to visitor convenience and environmental stewardship. The park’s staff and rangers demonstrate knowledge and dedication, often providing helpful information and ensuring that the natural environment remains protected for future generations. Their presence adds an additional layer of safety and support, especially during peak seasons.
While the park’s popularity speaks to its many strengths, it also means that certain trailheads and parking areas can become crowded during weekends and holidays. Planning visits during off-peak times can help visitors enjoy a more tranquil experience. Additionally, ongoing efforts to maintain and improve trail infrastructure will be essential to managing increased visitation while preserving the park’s pristine character.
In summary, Lory State Park offers a beautifully diverse and accessible outdoor destination that celebrates the spirit of Colorado’s wilderness. Its combination of scenic variety, well-maintained trails, and thoughtful amenities makes it an outstanding choice for both dedicated adventurers and casual visitors alike. Whether you seek a challenging hike, a scenic bike ride, or simply a quiet place to connect with nature, Lory delivers an enriching experience that invites repeated...
Read moreTERRIBLE FOR WEDDING VENUES!!!
I absolutely WOULD NOT RECOMMEND Lory State Park for a wedding venue location. I understand that Lory is a state park, not designed as a wedding venue, but they are NOT organized enough to provide wedding services. Throughout the entire wedding process, they would not tell us all the information and be upset when we didn't do what they wanted. The only thing they were consistent on was giving us different answers to the same question because each time we talked to them we would talk to a different person. For example (one of many), they ask on the wedding application if you would like to host a rehearsal at Lory (additional fees apply). What they do not tell you is that you need to fill out another application for the rehearsal to reserve the time for it.
Another issue is that they say on the application the capacity for each site. We reserved Soldier Canyon which says ON THE APPLICATION that the site has a 250 person and 50 vehicle capacity. What we didn't find out until the week before the wedding is that they don't actually mark off those 50 vehicle spots and so you better just hope that other guests at the park don't take up all the parking spaces by the sites.
They also were upset with us the day of our rehearsal because we had 2 trucks parked down by the Soldier Canyon pavilion to unload decorations. The first ranger moved the sign saying no vehicles were allowed down that road when we arrived without us even asking him to, but when we left a different ranger came down and incredibly rudely chewed us out because apparently one of the vehicles was parked where they had planted new grass. There was no sign or any indication that there was new grass, and in fact it looked EXACTLY like the road the other vehicle was parked on. As I said earlier, these were just a couple of the issues we ran into while coordinating our event there. Inconsistent answers, not enough information provided up front, and rude workers made having our ceremony here more trouble than...
Read moreI absolutely love this place! I love being a volunteer Nature Interpretive Guide and working with all the school groups. It's fun to teach the children about wildlife, geology, ecology, environmental science, and protecting our lands. The geologic record is crazy fascinating! This is the most diverse public park I know of too, with its equine jumps, mountain bike center, varied trails, backwoods camping, hunting, fishing, picnic areas, etc. There's something for everyone. I just wish people wouldn't leave their dog's poop on or by the trail, either bagged or unbagged. If you're going to bring your mutt, clean up after him so the Park staff don't have to. If wildlife come in contact with dog scat, it can actually make them sick, plus it's rude to other people. Help keep Lory great. Pick up ALL your trash, food scraps, pet waste, etc., and dispose of it properly. If you packed it in, you can pack it out, at least as far as the garbage cans. Stay on designated trails, and leave the rocks, sticks, plants, leaves, etc., in the park for the next person to enjoy. If you love the park too, consider donating some time to help keep it up, or a bit of $, since State Parks in CO do not receive Public Tax funds. Check out the Friends of Lory Non-Profit organization to find out how you can help keep this wonderful...
