This is in regards to the campground and not the entire park. I originally reserved a site with proximity to the restrooms and showers in deference to the needs of my wife and myself. Not knowing that Reserve America (RA) does not name the road next to the sites. It is not an access road as I had thought, but is, in fact, State Highway 36. That highway is not more than 20 feet away from the site I originally reserved with only an ill-kept fence and a slight downward grade between it and the site. As cars regularly travel this road at speeds from 50 to 70 mph, this is not a safe thing. As stated to me, this is not the only problem that has occurred through the use of RA for this campground. I requested a move to a site not already under reservation and the rangers were sympathetic to my experience and so accommodated my request. It was difficult to truly enjoy the site - even the shorter hikes, as the traffic noise carried even to those trails.
I'm sure that if someone's children hadn't broken the bridge we could have crossed the river and hiked the longer trails and gotten away from that noise, but it still remained when we tried to sleep. In all, I'd say the State Parks are doing what they can, but they can do better than Reserve America as a third-party system as they do not seem interested enough to give full information about a site so that a consumer can make a...
Read moreI would give this place 5 stars if it wasn't for the traffic. We have stayed here 3 times and have only endured these stays due to good ear plugs. The road is literally right next the the campground and it's a very busy road with lots of loud trucks. Not to mention the occasional jerk that has to honk their horn when driving by at 2 am. Other than that it is amazing and right in the heart of a redwood Grove. The river is also very close by if you like swimming. I would recommend the sites closest to the river as it can drowned out some of the car noise but sometimes it cannot be ignored. Showers are 50 cents to start (I recommend 75 cents and a dollar for the wives with lots of hair). They are nice and hot but very small space. You can get quarters at the check-in station. There are some nice walking /running trails right across the road as well and our favorite Grove of all time is only 2 miles away (Cheatham). I think after this last week's stay we have had enough of the traffic but to have a spot reserved in the Redwoods is hard to come by and this has suited our needs on every occasion. They also have a restaurant on Carlotta now(Tornado Dave's) which is spectacular! Avenue of the giants is only about a 1/2 hour away as well. Just don't forget ear plugs and you'll enjoy this place even more. Go do stuff during the day so you don't have to ...
Read moreI have no idea how this place is rated at over 4 stars. I give it 1. One for the awesome staff who were extremely helpful and for the day use creek area which was neat. Other than that this is not nor should ever be called camping. Hwy 36 is so close to the road side spots you can feel the rumbling as trucks go by and its constant. All. Night. Long. Oh and the locals are kind enough to either honk as they drive by or floor it so they're accelerating and making as much noise as possible. I just don't see how being on the creek side can make the noise any better as its only an additional 20 yards or so away. In addition our neighbors decided to be loud, set up their equipment and sleeping mattresses not when they arrived in the day but at night after heavy drinking, and had no concept of camping etiquette whatsoever. We had a 3 night stay planned and left after the first single worst night camping of my life. Went to Humboldt Redwoods State Park and found a nice spot...
