The drive to independence pass is phenomenal the views you get and the road itself is incredible. Now if you want to visit in the winter it won’t be possible most of the times the road is closed due to the weather. So I would recommend going durning the summer months. There are so many pulls offs to get pictures I highly recommend this drive to independence pass. Once at the top you will be at a loss for words, you walk on the path for little less and then 5 minutes and get the view of all the surrounding mountains. Dress warm it might be a solid 65 75 out but once at the top the wind can make it feel like it’s in the 30s. Now this sits at 12k plus feet so be prepared!!!! If your afraid of heights I wouldn’t recommend the drive up no guard rails the whole way up and the roads can get very narrow. It is a popular places so expect some delays/ traffic I went durning September only...

Nice, quick walking loop from the parking lot, as well as a trail leading to the top of one of the fourteeners. Bring a jacket, very windy, Temps were in the high 50s in the middle of August. Note about the drive across the pass: it's not for the faint of heart. The road is extremely narrow in many places. There are limits on the drive, and there are no vehicles over 35 feet allowed. We were in the Tahoe for this trip, but there is NO WAY I'd take our RV (skinny in the RV world, a class C on a Mercedes Spriter chassis) on this drive. We saw a few rental RVs en route, and they were way over the double yellow line most of the drive. Overall, it is a breathtakingly...

If you choose to hike to the observation deck, be mindful that the altitude may have an affect on you. Research the affects and be prepared to decend. Even if you're in great shape, the lower oxygen levels at high altitudes can cause you to experience shortness of breath with minimal exertion. Enjoy the beauty of the tundra but don't risk your health. Also, it is much colder than lower levels. There was a 20*tempurature drop as we headed up from Aspen. The tempurature difference was even more dramatic going down...
