This is one of the best MTB trails in the world, check MTB Project, All Trails, etc.
Reasons why: Type of track: 98% of the trail is rolling on smooth rock, there are only a few spots on dirt, broken rock or sand, all the rest is flowy up and down over rock. Technicality: The limit of this ride is just your leg power, and maybe your bike, everything is rideable even if scaried of extremely steep down or up ramps; the rubber of your tires will fusion with the rock to reach an absolute bonding grip. Length: This 9.4-mile track is the perfect amount of adrenaline to release in 2 h if your are an experienced rider without stopping or over 3 h if you take some breathing stops and some photos, you will feel accomplished but not being in the point when you think how much is left to the tail head. Views: not only you will see the entire area of sand flats when you are in the higher point but also you will be able to see the spectacular La Sal mountains on the east, even full of snow if you do a ride in spring or fall, and the gorgeous Colorado river meandering along the north and east cliffs of the Sand Flats area. It is pretty entertaining to stop and see some of the ATVs and Jeeps struggling to complete their circuit over steep and long dedicated tracks (not shared with the MTB track except in four crossings).
Note: this is an Mountian Bike track where dirt motorcycles are allowed, altough there are not too many. Hikers are also allowed but I haven't seen many as the true enjoyment is to Mountain Bike it; I don't even think that e-bikes may enjoy it in the same manner as the down will be the same and the ups are simply too easy and lack the challenge of truly pushing the pedals with your legs.
All in all, don't forget that this is a black/diamont track and you need some experience and endurance to complete this ride, altough you can always dismount in some sections. You have a practice loop as hard as the rest of the track that will allow you to decide whether you want to do the entire 9.4 mile lollipop track if you haven't ridden it before. You will also have a couple of spots where you can go off the main track to have magnificent views of the Colorado river, which will add some mileage to your ride.
This track is within the Sand Flats Recreation Area, where you need to pay an entrance fee of $5 per typical vehicle, the National Park Annual Pass is not allowed. The parking area for the trail has big capacity and is provided with...
Read morePretty spectacular, and iconic, but not my favorite bike trail. I'm reasonably fit - riding about 5K miles per year. I consider myself a pretty capable intermediate on technical trails. I don't mind a challenge, but this trail was tough in ways that weren't fun. Slickrock includes some fairly challenging steep sections which were difficult to grunt out. It was definitely cool to be able to climb stuff that steep. My GPS said upwards of 30% a few times. However, the repeated nature of the steep sections is a bit wearing. What made this different from other tough trails I have ridden is that the payoff really wasn't that great. The descents were so steep that I could never "let go" and really get speed. There was almost no "flow" to the trail. Additionally, the slickrock was great for traction, but was never smooth. The pockmarking on the stone produces a continual vibration that is a bit like riding cobbles, and makes the ride harder without adding any enjoyment. I've ridden some bare granite in the Appalachians, and (as long as it is dry) it has grip that is as good, but it doesn't suffer from the jarring ride quality that Slickrock has. I'm glad I went, but next time I'm in Moab (if ever), I'll ride...
Read moreThe Moab Slickrock Trail has quickly become one of my favorite mountain bike rides! This trail offers a challenging technical experience, with steep climbs and tight, rocky switchbacks that will test your skills. One great feature is that electric-assist mountain bikes are allowed, making it accessible for a wider range of riders.
The stunning vistas along the trail had us frequently stopping to snap photos. We chose to ride during sunset, transitioning into the night with bike lights, which was nothing short of magical. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the changing light highlighted the unique rock formations, transforming the landscape before our eyes. The way the rocks shifted colors and shadows in the fading light was an unforgettable sight.
If you're looking for a trail that offers both technical riding and breathtaking scenery, the Moab Slickrock Trail is...
