Very easy and beautiful trail. Main purpose of this hike was try to enjoy the sunshine. We were planning for Dream Lake, but didn’t want to get up too early, so changed our plan heading to Sprague Lake instead.
We stayed at VRBO peak View retreat near RMNP, woke up at 5am, only took us 24 minutes to get there, only 1 car in the parking lot. We got there 5:45am, way before sunrise 6:14am. We can see the trail well steady because of the bright moonlight. Temperature was 46 degrees F. The road mostly clear except the northwest mountain side (about 0.15 mile) still cover with some snow.
Enjoyed very much with peace and quiet here, moonlight, Rocky Mountain pecks covered by snow. Since yesterday was cloudy, the sunrise didn’t shine on the pecks much. Definitely will come back here again and try for a better chance.
There are lots of picnic tables and BBQ grills by the parking lot. It’s a very popular spot in the summer.
The trail is very short and not much elevation grains. Good for kids and any one with different...
Read moreBeautiful place to watch the sunset. Dragonflies, abundance of wildflowers. river flowing in to the lake and a river flowing out. The lake itself is quite placid with large fish sometimes jumping out to tease the rod and reel crowd. Great rocks for letting the kids climb. Bench stops along the river, but no picnic tables to mar the space with noise. It was peaceful. And the bell of the ball was the juvenile moose who showed up to eat. Two downsides. Mosquitos, so make sure you bring repellant. And the second. People. The moose came out at sunset to eat, but people got too close and blocked his exit. After scolding one person after he tried to sneak up behind the moose to get a good picture, we decided to leave before things got dangerous. Not sure why people still don't understand wild animals are not docile. Give the moose space. Take your photos from a distance. Don't turn your back. And then move away. Don't become part of a human wall...
Read moreSprague Lake is a beautiful and less crowded alternative to Bear Lake in the Rocky Mountain National Park. Make sure you park and enjoy a walk/hike around the lake. Maybe you'll see a moose like we did! We also saw magpies and other local birds. Prepare to enjoy the scent of fresh pines. If only boondocking were allowed! Most vehicles under 24-26 feet should fit in the parking lot. Class B RVs will fit fine. Restrooms with flush toilets and sinks are available. A nearby creek offers a relaxing respite from the long, winding drive around the park. We did see some people fly fishing in a group. Apparently part of the lake is easily wadable. Check with a ranger for details. Beware of mosquitos. Portions of this area are reasonably wheelchair accessible. Picnic tables are scattered around as well, so...
