The ruins themselves are a wonderful treat to see. But the plaques need updating and better explanations as to what the viewer is actually seeing. For example, many people think they are seeing the original ruins, and, for the most part, they are not. They are looking at reinforced concrete walls and structures that are needed to prevent erosion, but this isn't clear. Also, even during COVID, the rangers could easily do a couple daily socially distanced talks as the whole thing is outside and close to the visitor center. Especially for a rather hefty $10 fee, people should get a little more bang for their buck. There are some wonderful trails in the area around the marsh and beautiful Verde River, too, but these are not advertised in the...
Read morewe love stopping at the underrated or lesser known National Park Service Sites! this one certainly has lots of history, but i would never recommend someone come out of their way to see it. if you are visiting Jerome or Cottonwood, you are close enough, BUT i don’t agree that they should be charging $10 per person, as it is a very short paved trail to the ruins. i would say you could spend an hour here max and experience the little visitor center museum and the short walk outside. they were dog friendly, so we appreciate that! if you’re looking for similar, but more interesting National Park Sites— i recommend Pecos National Historic Park in New Mexico or Tonto National Monument a bit further...
Read moreVery nice National Monument if you are interested in pueblos. The visitor center is very nice, contains very good explanations and display of artifacts from the excavation of the site. Has a clean bathroom outside and to the left of the visitors center. The site itself sits on top of a hill behind the visitors center and stands about 30-40 feet high. A small paved path about 100-150 feet leads to the ruins. A room at the top of the ruins has been reconstructed to show visitors how the original was built and appeared. Access to this room is by a narrow winding stairway on the outside that leads up to it. A nice view of the valley and the local area can be observed from the roof...
