The Valley of the Gods East Entrance is located off U.S. Highway 163 on the west side of the road. From here on, you will be travelling on a dirt-gravel road for the next 17 miles. Just a short distance from Highway 163, you will cross a small, shallow stream, well most of the time except after heavy rains. The Valley of the Gods Road is well maintained but can be washed out in some areas after heavy rains or thunderstorms, so it is always best to check the road conditions on the internet prior. We recommend using 4WD vehicles, but we see plenty of regular vehicles driving on the road but just use caution when driving. Since we have written short reviews for each location within the Valley of the Gods, we will only point out what is unique to each location along the way. All the locations are accessible by following the Valley of the Gods Road, which is a 17-mile scenic route, from the east entrance to the west entrance. Besides the entire VOG is free, you can also pull off anywhere along the way and camp overnight or longer for free, but no campfires. Be advised there are no types of services available along the route to include restrooms. So be prepared, bring plenty of water, snacks, etc., and let someone know your plans in case of an emergency. So, buckle up and enjoy the wonder of...
Read moreWhat a great boondocking place! The sites of the Valley and the Monuments are beautiful to see. It is very quiet out here as well. The weekend gets a bit busier but very tolerable. It's a must see if you are in the area.
We are in a large rig and made it safely about 1.5 miles in from the East entrance. There is a creek (hard panned) to cross, up a few steep grades and some tight turns but made it with flying colors. Just take your time and you'll do fine.
We eventually camped, for a few days, just before the "Setting Hen Butte" on the curve to the left. It was one of the few places we found in this stretch large enough for us. There are a ton of smaller spaces, which is ok, everyone deserves a spot, but for us this spot served us well. We had a wonderful view of the Valley below and many of the noted Monument Rocks in the distant.
FYI, if you're in a large rig, 36' or larger, it would be wise to have a good truck with 4WD to help get up a few of the inclines and help on the way out, which is pretty steep as well. Jus' sayin'!
Also, water can be obtained in Mexican Hat at the Exxon/7-11 store for a nominal fee. Dump is at one of the RV Parks in the...
Read moreFantastic drive!!!! Took about 90 minutes to go from east to west gate. Plenty of time for photos and viewing. Head the warnings about wet roads this would be tough then. Not a road for longer trailers, single axle should be fine to get through provided they have flipped axles and clearance. Numerous spots where there are high departure and arrival angles. Regular cars with higher clearance will be fine also. If you have a front spoiler or air dam that could be a problem. Cars like.... Audi a5 a6 a4 not good to go all the way, they are too low in the front, audi q5, Subaru, Toyota without low fronts, no issues.
Enjoy and don't forget to add on moki dugway on the west side. About an addition 45 minutes...
