Stopping at the Stokes State Forest office. Nice set up. Staff were very helpful/ informative. Bought a few t shirts with the Stoke State Forest logo, and a FABULOUS pack of 4 maps called Delaware Water Gap and Kittatinny trails, 2021, 8th edition (I have to see if there's an updated version). Drove up to the top of Sunrise Mountain. It is a one way, tarred road that kind of runs parallel to the Appalachian Trail. Parked ( room for about twenty cars), then walked about eighth of a mile to the very top where the shelter is. Temp was 92º, humid, but bareable with the breeze and water. Great views and picture taking. Met an Appalachian Trail NoBo hiker. Talked about the hike and Shaw's Hostel ( great place for thru-hikers) Monson, close to the start of the Hundred Mile Wilderness trail to Mt. Katadin. ☆☆☆Saw a rattlesnake (black and white) halfway up the mountain lying on the road! He rattled at us as we drove by. Sorry for disturbing your sunbathing, buddy! Along the way, there are several turn offs, with signage, that lead to large, accessible ponds and camps. Signage for trails, along the road, are easily seen also. They often lead you to the Appalachian trail. See photos. It's a long drive, but if you like the forest silence with some birds singing, an occasional deer and lots of opportunity to visit mountain ponds and lakes, you will love it. ☆☆☆ The next day started the unbelievably terrible air quality from ozone, and maybe Canadian fires. Hope the...
Read moreThis is a wonderful place to go and do yoga, there are trails for hiking, personally my friends and I used to being acoustic guitars and bongos and other acoustical instruments and jam in the pavilion that they have at the top of the lookout!! It's a really cool spot that takes you away and out of your everyday rat race stress and anxiety! I highly recommend taking a day and going up there.... maybe shoot for a day that will have a nice clear sunset! Very relaxing and it has become more popular in the last few decades, me and my GenX friends started going up there around 1990 and the last time I was up there was like 2015 and it seemed to have a few more people than I personally care to have up there! It's all relevant.... if people are there for the right reasons and not up there partying and yelling and throwing empty beer cans al over the place.... that's when the spot and the whole idea and meaning behind the spot gets ruined by a couple of bad apples. But do not let that discourage you because no matter what, the view and everything outweighs any idiot that's trying to ruin...
Read moreGreat place to do a quick hike with some of the best scenery in the state. Connected to the Appalachian. Spot has four lookout areas. One along the road, one in the parking area, one on the left before the pavilion and the pavilion itself. If you travel along the trail about a 1/2 mile there's another overlooking the other side of the mountain. There's restrooms and a few picnic tables in the parking area but best spot to eat is at the pavilion (a short walk from the parking area). the trail is worn and easy enough for the whole family and dog friendly. Going back out to the main highway there are a few small lakes and a cabin area that are fun to visit. Overall amazing day trip for just...
