Hello everyone, this is David Crittenden. My Uncle, John Moritz inherited this land, Cross Mountain from our Grandfather, John Moritz senior. When I was four years old I would go with my grandfather and we would feed the cattle at the small ranch which was once located at the end of Cross Mountain Drive which runs by the foot of Cross Mountain. On that easter in 1963 I saw a bonfire at the top of Cross Mountain. It was then that I learned that it was a local tradition, probably a local German tradition that they would build bonfires at the top of the hills circling Fredericksburg on Easter Sunday. Soon I could see they had five or six bonfires on all the hilltops surrounding the town every night for about four or five nights. My Grandmother, Rose Margaret Blum told me that Peter Cottontail was going to bring me Easter Eggs and I thought I saw a bunny laying eggs....
Read moreYes, this park does have a bathroom! Cross Mountain is a quaint, easy challenge rating trail. There are many little nooks with picnic tables and benches scattered throughout the park. The hike itself isn't very long, but there are a myriad of diverging paths that wind up and around the "mountain", making it easy to extend the length of your walk without having to take the same route. Dogs are welcome, and my rat pack of chihuahuas had a blast. It was a pleasant and fairly leisurely break from our normal routine, and we got a nice panoramic view of Fredericksburg without...
Read moreThis is a rustic little spot just barely East of Fredericksburg on the road to Enchanted Rock. It has a few short trails that one can hike. One that encircled the property is 10 minutes around and flat. Another climbed the summit (just 100 feet or so) somewhat steeply and a third is quite steep. The views are nice and of course a cross on top reminding us of Christ's incredible sacrifice so many years ago so we may have eternal salvation. This park is definetly worth 30 minutes to stop and check out when around...
