Lived in the bay area for a decade, and finally hiked this trail. Worth waking up early to do this hike to avoid the crowd, but also catch the sunrise.
We got to parking lot by 5:45am. Lot was already halfway full by 6:30. Completed hike in 3 hrs. There were so many people on the way down, and lots of people waiting to get a parking spot.
Great views of mountain and city. Very gradual incline and steeper 1/3 miles to the peak. There are benches at every view point. Lots of cows and they do cross the trail, so watch your step for cow dung. Keep dog on leash.

Bring a lunch and water (there is none along the trail) and enjoy lunch at the top before heading back down. Steeper sections are better in a low hiking shoe, but plenty of people survive with far less.
