The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is one of the most incredible outdoor experiences I’ve ever had, and it deserves every bit of praise it gets. Stretching over 2,000 miles, it offers a true adventure whether you’re setting out for a day hike, a weekend backpacking trip, or even dreaming of a thru-hike. What makes the AT so special is not just its length, but the variety of landscapes you encounter. One moment you’re walking under a canopy of quiet hardwood forests, the next you’re climbing to a rocky overlook with sweeping mountain views that take your breath away.

I especially appreciate how well the trail is maintained by the volunteers and organizations that care for it. The white blazes are reliable, shelters are thoughtfully placed, and there’s a strong sense of stewardship from everyone who uses it. Every section feels cared for and welcoming.

What really sets the Appalachian Trail apart is the sense of community. Hikers often greet each other with a smile or a kind word, and there’s an unspoken camaraderie that comes from sharing the journey. It’s not just a trail—it’s a living piece of American history and nature combined. If you want to experience peace, challenge, and connection all in one place, the...

I was underwhelmed with the AT coming from Alaska. We did a short section from Royal place to Harper’s Ferry. No views (maybe 1 or 2). The trail was like the earth birthed rocks erupting at every angle possible beside horizontal. The shelters were nice (snakes, snoring or not) I was super grateful for the green tunnel which made the mid July heat much more tolerable. Let’s talk shoes…. Most people wore Altras but mine probably had 200 miles on them before the AT. Next time I will make sure they are new. I loved my hammock tent it helped take the weight/pressure off my hips. Lots of colorful people 90% were fun, others were shady, I would not do this trail by myself as a 51 year old lady. I hike in Alaska weekly …. The roller coaster WILL kick your butt!! The bears Dean is worth every penny, you will thank yourself for a hot shower, laundry and a cozy bed while you recharge your inreach. It was fun. I did this as a gift to myself after completing my doctorate but next time, I’ll hike a new trail in Alaska. We have views every 10 ft. Spoiled.
