Smaller state park with modern cabins in rustic forest setting. Good set up at the cabins for toddlers. Maybe not recommended for those with difficulty walking - slippery wooden steps and bridges everywhere. Know the following: no cell phone reception after you get on New Germany Road from Chestnut Ridge Road. There is adequate WiFi at the lodge on site (too slow to stream, though). plenty of newts, salamanders, and crayfish to find. Water snakes and terrapins abound. Bring bikes if you like mountain biking - lots of great trails. No sidewalks for little ones to bike so best avoid if unable to tolerate trail riding. Pay no attention to the hanging effigy at 2367 Chestnut Ridge Road which has been there for more than 5 years. The residents DO NOT believe one should interpret this as a symbol of lynching (as much as I and it sounds like many others have tried to show her it is everyone' first thought.) Unfortunately you WILL pass it if you want to take the quickest way off 68 to the park. Inhospitable and insensitive to say the least. Has colored our perception as to the residents in the area. A few Confederate flags wave off homes and trucks in the surrounding areas. (If you want to know more, here’s a summary of our conversation: For her it’s a symbol of depression and suicide. “I’ve tried to commit suicide three times. This is a reminder for me. And we keep it up because of people like you. Did you know there was also a mother with 2 children originally put up for Halloween? We keep it up because I can and people like you always want to bring it up. Black people don’t have any problem with it. It’s always white people who complain. You can take another road to get to New Germany. You don’t have to take this one. People stop and take pictures. Don’t bother us. Seems to bother you people more than anyone else. Our neighbors don’t care. “Cops have been called and reporters have come out. Any letter we get we toss in the wood oven back there. “It is not a symbol of lynching. You see there is a white face underneath? His name is Buster. We have black friends. I used to date a black guy. “The guy who lives inside would give you the shirt off his back. “We support Trump because he stands for freedom of speech and the...
Read moreThis place has went downhill so bad, The bathhouse is gross and dirty all the time. The campground bathrooms and showers are a complete disaster and disgusting mess all the time. The water in the swim area leaves a brown residual stain in your swimwear and on your person, A simple shower doesn't even help you literally have to wash your body multiple times to get it all off of you. Up until this year this was my one of my favorite places to camp. The Lack of rangers on patrol and the lack of keeping up with the park cleanliness has made it so my family and I chose to visit this place as an absolute last resort. Things need to change desperately. The noise level is also a huge inconvenience now as well with the traffic traveling through or by the campground you can't even get a peaceful night's rest anymore, every morning and every night in the middle of the night you will be woke up by loud traffic. Not to mention that the coming "upgrades" will eliminate the camp loop for the dogs and they will then be mixed into the main campground, Big inconvenience considering you already get woke up half the time by whoever lives in the park area and has a dog that barks all night which means if your pet is anything like most it's going to bark because it hears...
Read moreWow ..What a great get-away!! 2 hours out of Mt Airy where my relatives live and we arrived in New Germany State Park on the Friday before Father's Day. Clean, Modest, rural 1930's CCC cabin #11 with large living room, dining area and kitchen. Bath on first floor. 3 rooms upstairs, Single beds and cots were comfortable with our own sheets/pillows.All cleaned and ready for our arrival. Watched the fog rise off the mountains, HUGE fish swimming in the pond;3ft Tiger Musky, plenty of bass, crayfish. We swam in clean water on a nice little beach with friendly life guards. The park offered paddle /rowboats/Kayaks to rent if you wish. Went for a great nature walk after the rain with Andrea, the park Naturalist. We got lucky with some great weather...cool nights and crisp mornings. Park was labeled as, The Best Kept Secret ..I would say that but, there would be too many people when I returned. It was like renting a state park for your family. I could go and on about shaded areas, park benches with charcoal grills, Snack Bar,history of the park and the gift shop. We normally go to Pennsylvania State Parks and New Germany State Park was...
