Visited on 7/15/2017. I love quiet places and this one almost topped it for me, had it not been for the occasional passing of cars (most of the sites are next to the only road). This of course is amplified by how quiet the place is, so it is really not too bad. I also tremendously enjoyed the murmuring of Big Run in the night. The distance between the sites is as far as you can get, and there were not many campers. So if you don’t like solitude, this could feel too much. Go with a friend. The place is beautiful, but the views from many campsites are limited by the forest and mountain slopes. This includes the beautiful Savage River Lake, of which you see little from the road. Take everything with you, including water. There’s nothing there but beautiful, big campsites. Long distances between sites and pay stations. Maps could be improved. A compass might be needed. There’s also no on-site cell phone reception for AT&T, but was able to get signal on higher grounds. Took the one-mile hike to the tower and loved it. For the first time I saw this white bee balm. I am familiar with the red bee balm which is also abundant in the forest. Many butterflies as well. Kudos for the MD forest authorities for keeping...
Read moreIt's the places like this that are already the most Gunn before video games, computers and 100s off television stations available all day and night long. We would take trips to sound time enjoying nature. The views here are gorgeous with a beautiful water way. There's something I enjoy about landscape photography. All the difference plays of light and darkness, the wild animals, the trees and plants, all the different kinds of formations that have developed there. The quiet and peacefulness, hiking trails, bike trails, room what I understand they have guided tours, go camping, have a fire and fun. Should be a wonderful place to go camping. I have so many places that I would like to go back to and explore more of. This is on my list of places I would love to explore more of. It's been a while since I was there but if made enough of an imprint in New to get...
Read moreOne of my favorite places. Secluded, wild... Great place to get away and find some solitude and peace of mind. One warning though, wading the Savage River is advanced wading. Not a place you're likely to drown but but break an ankle or blowout a knee absolutely. The pics in this review are at a relatively low flow. About 150 cfs, I think. When the water is higher, all those boulders are underwater and you have to wade around them or step over or on them. It gets tough. I've fallen more times on the Savage than every other place combined. If you plan on getting in the water, wear your cleats and carry a staff. But still, an...
