I have visited the park twice. The first time was a few years ago driving around Cades Cove with my family trying to see if we could find any bears.. no bears that day but it was absolutely stunning and we found a cute little historical building!

This year (posted 2025), my husband and I visited the other side of the park and hiked up to see the view from their Kuwohi observation tower. The pictures don’t do any where justice to how gorgeous the 360 degree view it from up there. The altitude is very high so definitely take a few minutes adjusting after you drive up before taking on the steep, paved climb. You’ll definitely want to pack light for that one!

On the way back, we parked on the side of the road in a little section and entered the Kephart Prong Trail. This was a beautiful little gem of a trail! Much more secluded and only slightly less steep though about halfway through the trail becomes quite rocky and with all the rain part of the trail was sort of a mini river. 😆 The actual river was so beautiful! The trail follows along it up the mountain and you cross over 4 felled log makeshift bridges with a sturdy handrail on one side to cross the river until you get to where it intersects with the Appalachian Trail and can rest at the shelter for a spell before heading back! We actually saw an elk in the woods about while on the first half of the trail which was a really unique and fun experience and there are some remnants (water pump, chimney) from the conservation group that helped create the trail! Both trails are out and back. I’d definitely recommend bringing sticks for Kephart Prong.
