We set out early in the morning on the Alum Cave Trail, knowing that parking along Highway 441 is limited. Our initial goal was to reach Mt. Le Conte, but once we arrived, we decided to continue on to Myrtle Point—and it was absolutely worth it. The views of the Smoky Mountains from there are breathtaking.
We hiked in the fall, so having good gear, plenty of snacks, and enough water was essential. There's a small visitor shop at Mt. Le Conte where you can warm up with hot tea and enjoy some homemade cookies and snacks. It's a cozy, welcoming spot.
The trail is quite crowded up to Alum Cave, but as you continue further, the number of hikers thins out due to the trail's increasing difficulty. Since it's an out-and-back trail, we returned the same way we came.
The hike from Highway 441 to Alum Cave typically takes about 2-2.5 hours. From Alum Cave to Mt. Le Conte, you can expect another 2-3 hours depending on your pace. Continuing from Mt. Le Conte to Myrtle Point adds approximately 30-45 minutes. Plan accordingly and enjoy...
Read moreModerate - Hard difficulty. Trail was a little muddy at the beginning of the trailhead. It was well maintained till the Mt Lecont(6200ft) visitor center. Lot of beautiful views. There are some great views at cliff top point, hill top point(6500ft) and Myrtle point. The trail is really muddy after Mt Lecont to these viewpoints. And it is also Narrow at many places.
