I learned this place was named “inner space” because the cave system was found during the space race and when they were trying to decide what to name it, the idea of going inward to explore came up.
Came here with my senior-ish parents and had an awesome time! They offer military discount (just a few bucks off our total but as a lowly enlisted, I’ll take it where it’s offered!)
All 3 of us did the adventure tour. An easy paved, lit route with a guide. There are rugs and rails on this path that can be utilized. Our guide was really friendly, knowledgeable and engaging and even had some fairy tales involving the stalagmites for the rowdy kids in our group. There was also some bones and artifacts that are found in the Texas area, and some paintings of prehistoric animals. Definitely kid and Senior friendly, 3.5/10 difficulty — as long as you can walk about .75 miles in a bit of humidity. There are a couple places towards the end where you can sit.
My dad and I then went on the Hidden Passage Tour — a little more “advanced” than the Adventure tour. A bit narrower, unpaved, and a flashlight needed (they provide them). There were only 3 people in this group, including my dad and I. We saw a bat, and a cave cricket—both of which our guide had info on. She also was able to show us the luminesce of some of the formations during total darkness. It was a really fantastic addition to the Adventure tour. You don’t get as many views of the larger rooms but there is some overlap. The difficulty is more that the passages are narrower and you won’t be getting any rugs and rails to assist with footing. If you’re a claustrophobe to the point where you won’t even go down a European alley, and are extremely afraid of about 30 seconds of darkness… this might not be for you. But for 70% of adults, this tour should be manageable. Would not recommend for kids.
They have another tour that I’d like to come back to—the Wild tour. This one sounds more like real “caving” with crawling and hard hats. Seems to be about 3-4 hours long, and I didn’t want to do this with my parents just waiting for me or having to come back for me. So I’ll do this one another time.
Also! Note the times on the website - iffy. At least it was wrong the day we went. They open at 10, I believe, which I think is what Google says.
Also note: I’ve been in other cave systems where it drops 15-20 degrees in the cave, but that’s NOT the case with this one. It was actually warmer in this cave than outside, and more humid. Temperature and humidity is listed on the screens by the ticket window.
Overall, staff, caves, and experience were awesome. Thank...
Read moreThe Inner Space Caverns are a great way to spend the day. Entering the cave will depend on what tour you would like to enjoy. There is a paved Adventure Tour which is good for most ages and is pretty well lit up inside, There is the Hidden Passages tour with less lighting and uneven walkways with different terrains which may include water or mud at times. Additionally, there is a Wild Tour, which includes a lot of tight places and crawling at times. I listed them from least to greatest in price. The Wild Tour is by online reservation only. The other 2 tours have walk-in service and sometimes provide online payments. There is a sign in book upon entry. The ticket booth has a kind and helpful cashier. You can purchase the Saber Tooth Lift Ride 6. If you are an AAA member, you can get a discount as well, or there is an online coupon you can screenshot for other discounts, too. I believe they have a military discount, too. The coupon is good per person in your group up to 6 people. The snack bar has souvenir cups, which you can purchase a fountain drink and get free refills with when using it. There is a nice gift shop which has a range of items priced decently in most cases. The tour ends at the gift shop where you can purchase a group photo if you got your picture taken while inside the cave. There are fossils of animal bones encased within the lobby across from the snack bar tables, which were discovered within the cavern. There is a paydirt dig which kids can participate in for an extra fee. There is a small outside park with a slide that kids can enjoy. Expect to get warm from humidity inside the cavern. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and was full of jokes. We had a great family experience. This was my 2nd time to go because I wanted to bring additional family members there to enjoy it. We came during the summer last time, and during Spring Break this time, and I would like to say, the staff had a positive attitude no matter how busy they got there. This is a family-friendly place and is definitely a kid-friendly destination that you should not miss out...
Read moreAmazing, Adventurous Experience!. The Caves are so much more then I expected from a small town. The Caves take 8 Hours just to get to one end! They offer different Packages / Tours. If you are physically not fit, or not custom to any form of exercise. I recommend to take the simple Adventure Tour. The Tour offers A Lighted cave and not as much Hiking or small Entryways. The Hidden passages Tour is diffently not recommended for claustrophobic people or anyone who can't go up and down steep Slippery stairs and rock formations going up and down continuously and anyone unable to dunk down in certain parts of the cave, due to the cave becoming small and low rock formations/ceiling. The Tour is 15 mins longer then the adventure tour. Please bring clothes you will sweat in!. If you take this tour also have shoes with Traction. Unfortunately people did slip and fall on my tour due to not good shoes for hiking and slip areas of the cave. The Zipline ride was so much higher then I expected!. Diffently recommend for added experience. And it is cheaper when purchased with a tour. Birthday parties also can be hosted here. The gift shop has amazing finds and has a lot of stuff. Sweet treats are also sold here like hot fudge bars and Caramel popcorn etc. The Hidden passages Tour is a complete experience where you go through a cave in the complete dark. Flashlights are provided for everyone. This Tour also has a small wooded bridge to go over in the cave that drops 25ft down for those who may not like bridges, keep in mind. Bats are also included 🦇. Great experience and Tour guide who was very knowledgeable...
