We were on vacation on St Simon’s Island for my birthday when I started looking at different golf courses in the area. After reading the reviews, we decide to try one of the courses at Jekyll Island. I called on Aug 19th to get a tee time for me to play 18 holes and for my wife to be a rider. Daniel was super nice and recommended us to play Oleander. When we got to the course the two gentlemen working with the carts were very friendly. As I went into the club house, I asked the man behind the counter if he was Daniel that I had spoken to earlier. He said no , his name was Adam. So I told him what Daniel said about playing Oleander and he agreed. So after about 14 holes it rained us out. The course was beautiful and the deer were very pleasant to watch. As we made our way back in, we stopped at the clubhouse to pick up some logo balls for our three grandsons (which are obsessed with golf). We wanted the Jekyll Island ball for them, so Adam went out of his way to go in the back to get two more of them since we had only found one in the bin. With Adam being such an amazing person we decided to come back on the 21st to play Indian Mound. It was a very memorable and enjoyable afternoon! We saw an 8 ft alligator and deer on almost every hole. Of the two course, I would have to say Indian Mound was my favorite. I’ve played at courses all over the Southeast, and Adam is one of the most professional and personable people I’ve ever encountered in a clubhouse. He is definitely an asset to this amazing club. So don’t let the other reviews keep you from playing at Jekyll Island. We will definitely be back to play Pine Lakes when the renovation is complete and we are back...
Read moreTwo stars for the Oleander Course maybe a bit a stretch, but I am feeling generous. Fairway grass was way to long so no roll at all. Rough was to deep for this type of course (lots of play from a wide range of handicaps and skill levels), greens were furry and painfully slow as well as having a lot of dead areas, bunkers had almost no sand in them at all, and the tee boxes were in rough shape as well. The rate for our round was $69.00. I think $25.00 would have been a much more reasonable price based on course conditions. The positives for the course are it is really a nice layout and if taken care of properly it could be a fun track. The other positive was the carts are nice and have a very accurate GPS system.
I also want to add that we played one of the courses back in October of 2020 and the conditions were a little better, but not by a great margin. It is sad to see them not being taken care off, but charging prices that don't reflect that. We had played here some years prior and the conditions were much better. Based on the conditions they are in now It is highly doubtful that we will choose to play any of the Jekyll Island courses again...
Read moreI guess I shouldn't have expected much for $45 but ... WOW. Maybe the worst fairways I've ever played on in early October in SE Georgia. The worst of everything in that they were soft ( little roll ) with almost no grass . What was there was Bermuda-ish. Early October is prime time for Bermuda in Coastal Georgia so what gives ? My guess. Just old tired grass. Same in the " rough " with lots of nearly bare patches. For most of us it's actually easier to hit out of a deep lie than off dirt ( especially with lofted irons ) Clue: watering bad grass doesn't grow it. It just makes the fairways soft. Incredibly the traps weren't terrible...just beach sand. The greens as expected were slow and bumpy but I've seen worse. What's sad is it's a great location, nice folks, good amenities and the layout is more than decent. This ( Oleander ) COULD be a nice course with some serious TLC. One par 4 on this breezy day was nearly impossible from the whites ( I'm a solid 11 ) but other than that a lot of good holes. The ONLY good news is that posting today's score will help raise my HCP. Wedges off dirt and slow bumpy greens do not often lead to...
