We absolutely love Jekyll Island. It is one of the reasons we moved to the area almost 17 years ago. Back then, Jekyll Island was quiet. During busy times, it may have taken 10 to 15 minutes to get through the toll booth, but back then it was cash only and only 1 lane for cash payments and one lane for annual pass holders.
The island itself is about two thirds undeveloped. There are lots of walking and biking trails. There are a lot of public beach access paths and a lot of parking available.
There is a small retail area when you first get onto the island at the roundabout. We generally avoid this area, although we do like to visit the Wee Pub in the quiet season.
The historic district is a nice walk to see the hotel and homes of the ultra rich 100 years ago. We like eating at the Wharf in the quiet season, although even then you might have to get there early if you don't have a reservation.
We have done a sunset boat tour as well as took a handsome cab ride during Christmas at night to see the lights. Both were reasonably priced and a good way to see the island. Our favorite way to see the island is from a kayak. We use the boat ramp at the marina to put our kayaks in.
Since the revitalization of the island, it has gotten a lot more crowded. There are now 3 toll lanes that accept cash or credit. Your best bet is to pay ahead of time on the island's web site. Do not try to get on the island between 11am and 3 pm when the weather is nice. You will be stuck in traffic at the toll. We have seen it backed up 3 plus miles during this time. We are usually leaving the island during this time period and still stare in wonderment at the line of cars.
We generally visit early morning or late afternoon/early evening when the island isn't as crowded. Check the tide charts before you visit. The ocean at low tide is usually pretty dirty and it is not enjoyable to be in...
Read moreJekyll Island is a gorgeous state park, with tons to offer. There's abundant wildlife, multiple historic buildings, and multiple types of beaches. My first choice every time is the aptly-named Driftwood Beach on the northern tip of the island, where you'll find some of the most picturesque views on the southern Atlantic coast.
Mosaic and the Sea Turtle Center are close by each other, and make inexpensive and fun quick hour-long trips each. The variety of restaurants on the island is decent for how small it is, and generally everything is not priced for tourism.
The only place that's open past 9pm any day of the week is Wee Pub, so make sure if you're a night owl that you bring your own entertainment! There's a liquor store in the little downtown square, plenty of seating around the hotels, and beaches never close, so that's not hard.
The weather is considerably warmer here year round than anything further inland, so bring yourself some shorts and tees even if the temperature is showing in the 60s - it may be lying to you 😂
You only need to pay about $15 to park on the island once as long as you don't leave again - so it makes an excellent day or weekend trip. I will say, if you're looking to do more than two days, this isn't the place. Anything more and you'll find yours quickly running out of...
Read moreWhat an absolutely charming area. Most definitely a gem for Georgia. So clean and pristine. I don't think i can go to another beach again.
We were there Feb 14-15, 2022. Weather could not have been more perfect. We didn't find a glass globe so we purchased one instead! It's beautiful and is stamped with 20th commemorative year.
We saw so many live sand dollars on the beach. It was magical. We sat out for hours just enjoying the beauty. Our 5 mile walk on the beach was so nice it didn't seem like 5 miles.
Go see driftwood beach. It is breathtaking. We caught the most spectacular sunset near the entrance west endn at a little beach. And our sunrise view was just as breathtaking the next morning. We stayed in Days Inn on 2nd floor- what a treat.
The Turtle museum so nice. We saw them treating 2 turtles for low temperatures. The educational life expectancy guide was fun. At 5 (?) different life stations, you pick 1 of 4 choices on what a turtle might face throughout its life. At the end you find out if you make it. I did! 65 years. Husband died after 1 year 😔 give it a try.
The Tiffany window was a treat to see in Faith church. Although I loved the other...
