We were here the first week of February '20. There was only two camp sites filled, one was me. As I saw in other YouTube video the campground was very green (grass). In February the trees were bare and leaves on the ground. The Park is small, with only 26 camp sites. They have a beach swimming area. A mini putt-putt course (that was fun). Most of the camp sites are on the water (small lake). Very beautiful park. Now here are the bad things. The Park is out in the middle of nowhere and I mean nowhere. A very small town is five miles away. They have two grocery stores. Piggly wiggly which has no deli and Harvey it's like a Winn-Dixie. There are a couple of small restaurants in town. I found them to be kinda expensive for the area. There is a place called White Oak Pastures. It's 13 miles north on US27. There is a great restaurant with a gift shop. The food is out of this world. Now Dothan, Al. Is 45 minutes away and there is a Walmart there. I have been saving the worst part for last. There is No and I mean No WiFi Data service in the campground. I found some Data service at the visitor center. Oh there is absolutely no "air TV" in the campground. So if you don't have a satellite system your not getting TV. So bring some videos to watch. One last bit of information, site 10 is the...
Read moreThis park is pretty well maintained except for the Mound Trail from the parking area. It has very old earth retaining plastic material that has raised up in many areas causing a trip hazard. I have called it to the attention of the staff in the Visitor Center. ( see photos I posted under " photos") Also the actual mound room and film in the museum is no longer open. There is a room of artifacts and good information on the mounds and their excavation. This is a charge of 3.50 per person.
The Temple Mound was amazing and a great flight of stairs to the top.
The campground is small but excellent. The
camp hosts do a great job and are very welcoming and friendly. The bathhouse is spotless, private and lots of hot water. Laundry on site and a little book exchange. The sites are level and plenty large. There are a couple " buddy" sites so read descriptions before you reserve. Several sites on the lakeshore. We had pull through # 14 that was perfect. Good walking trails, pedal boats and canoes for rent on the pretty lake. A couple small alligators spotted on our water tour. All in all, we would...
Read moreA hidden. And underrated gem, not just in Southwest GA, but in the Southeast. This truly is a beautiful park with great hiking trails, a beautiful lake, a great disc golf course, and lots of history.
This area used to be the largest settlement north of Mexico City. At one time it was basically the NY city of trade as many different trade routes passed through this area.
It's truly amazing to think of what it took the native tribes to construct the giant mound on site, which I must mention is a fabulous place to watch the sun set!
The camp sites are well maintained with several sites located right along the waters edge. They also have kayak, canoe, and paddle boat rental available.
I will warn you that the bugs (primarily gnats) can be a little gnarly during peak summer time, but otherwise, this park is a wonderful place to stay year round.
Make sure to check out the gift shop as well to pick up a little memento on your way out.
There is only a $5 parking fee to visit...
