The hike was a lot longer than we expected and it gets pretty extreme near the top, definitely more than we bargained for. We saw plenty of children and a few older folks but it wasn't exactly a fun time for them; it was a workout. It took us over an hour to summit going at a leisurely pace, but the view was well worth the climb.
In the future the hike may require a day pass to enter in order to cut down on visitors, and it's definitely needed. There was a line for the parking lot with a half hour wait and we were constantly picking up plastic bottles other people had thrown down.
The journey was definitely worth it though. At the top is a breathtaking waterfall with a crystal clear, blue lake with a fantastic view. The climb is well shaded (after a point) and follows a gorgeous stream with multiple small waterfalls every few feet. Near the top is a narrow, rock staircase that was by far the most treacherous part, but a handrail made it much easier.
Would definitely recommend to anyone, but please, clean up after yourself, leave the kids at home, and leave nothing but footprints.
P.S. No...
Read moreThe hike to Hanging lake starts at the cdot rest stop along interstate 70. The rest stop has some nice restrooms and a good paved trail along the river. Those wanting a more challenging hike can take the well marked turn up to hanging lake. The trail is not paved, and is quite rocky and steep all the way to the lake. The last hundred yards are the steepest as you come out of the trees and on to the edge of a medium-sized cliff, at this point there is a hand rail and large bolder steps. Then you arrive at the small lake, filled with super clear water and a several nice waterfalls. Partly surrounded by a nice boardwalk and benches. It took me about 45 minutes to reach the lake, and a bit less to get back down. The trail is busy but worth the hike. If you are East bound on the 70, and take this exit, and wish to continue East after you stop, you'll need to get back on the 70 heading west, take the next exit and then get back on going East. Have fun, don't litter, and use the bathroom before heading...
Read moreThis hike is intense, but so worth the effort. The hike up is full of rock steps, narrow walkways, and seven bridges. No dogs allowed so those who like to take their furry kids along won't be able to on this one. The views all along the path are breathtaking, it's like Narnia mixed with bridge to tarabitha smashed into a pretty little package. The top of the hike doesn't disappoint with a waterfall you can walk behind and friendly little chipmunks, please no matter how much little Theodore begs don't feed him. If you are deathly afraid of heights, stick close to the walls of the cliff you have to climb up to get to the lake. If you love hikes this...
