Well, hello there, Fellow Road Trippers! Let me tell you about a recent discovery that absolutely brightened my journey through the heartland: the World's Largest Easel in Goodland, Kansas. Now, I've seen my fair share of quirky roadside attractions, from giant balls of twine to oversized rocking chairs, but this one truly stands out, not just for its impressive scale, but for the unexpected delight it offers.
Upon rolling into Goodland, finding this colossal tribute to art was a breeze. Standing tall at a reported 80 feet, featuring a vibrant reproduction of Van Gogh's "Three Sunflowers in a Vase," it's certainly a sight to behold. It's part of a global "Big Easel Project" by artist Cameron Cross, which is pretty neat when you think about it โ a little piece of international art right in rural Kansas. You can walk right up to it, admire the sheer size of the "canvas," and snap some fantastic photos. Itโs got that perfect blend of artistic grandeur and charming kitsch that makes for a memorable stop.
But here's where my experience truly shone, and something you, my Fellow Road Trippers, will appreciate: the practicalities were on point! After a good stretch of driving, the call of nature is often a pressing concern, and let me tell you, the bathrooms here were clean. And I mean, sparkling. Itโs a small detail, but when you're on a long haul, a well-maintained restroom is a godsend. No grimacing, no holding your breath โ just clean, functional facilities. That alone makes it a highly recommended pit stop in my book.
Beyond the easel itself and the surprisingly pristine facilities, the atmosphere was just lovely. The folks I encountered were super friendly, radiating that warm, welcoming Midwestern hospitality. It wasn't just a quick photo op and a dash back to the highway; it felt like a genuinely pleasant place to pause, stretch your legs, and even strike up a...
ย ย ย Read moreKansas towns seem to all create a photo opportunity with some attraction in their towns. On this trip, there was this in Goodland, the Blue Sky Sculpture in Newton, the Dala in Lindsborg and the Czech Egg in Wilson. I guess in this Instagram day and age, it draws people in so why not?
First, the best area to park and view the artwork is from old US Hwy 24 the business route, not 19th Street. However there is a paved parking lot on the latter. Off of the highway, you face the artwork and the there is a path that leads right up to the giant easel. There are also a few picnic tables, a shade structure and some information as well.
To say the easel is large is an understatement! The piece of artwork is "Vase with Three Sunflowers", by van Gogh. It seems to be a little sun bleached, but still looks fine.
When we were there, there were two other couples there, one from the distant Illinois. It was a nice ten minute photo op. Don't think we will need to go back, but it did get us to stop in town as well as for a...
