To get to Grand Isle State Park requires at least an half and 45 minutes from New Orleans proper. It is basically a beach park with a few tables, restroom facility and fishing pier. There is also a campground on the premise.
I was not impressed with the beach sand and beach water. The water looked like a brown soup that you could not see with no view of its depth.
The most interesting part of Grand Isle is the journey to it. You go through some very interesting parts of Louisiana, where you see things that you have not seen before. Sometimes you were riding on little strips of land with water very close to you on both sides. If you turned your head too long, you could easily steer right into the water. I loved the parts where there were tons of fishing boats, just right next to the road. Some were right behind the homes of their owners, so close, it was just like having a car just outside of your garage.
Back to the park. The one thing is did like about it, was the fishing pier. When I walked out to take photos, a gentleman had this HUGE fish on the ground that he caught and it was gasping for air. He held it up so I could take a few photos of it. He indicated that it would weight about 20 to 30 pounds. It was a Grump fish and I've included photos of it, in this review.
Grand Isle is a small town, just before the park. Lots of boats, lots of trucks, elevated housing and a non-diverse homogeneous population. Enough said.
Bottomline, if you are physically looking for a nice looking beach with a little bit more facilities, head over to Waveland, Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis. If you are looking for good fishing from a pier, good campground then try Grand Isle State Park.
My first time exploring these places and each has it own...
Read moreWe tent camped on the beach. The beach was beautiful, it was super clean and well-maintained, and the bathrooms were meticulously clean- which is impressive for a beach campground! My only complaints about the place relate more to the natural environment than the facilities. We stayed for four days, three nights, and as we are from VA and aren’t familiar with the area, were unprepared for the daily storms rolling in from the Gulf. The sand grains on the beach are so very fine that each time the wind blew, the sand case in through every screen in our tent. I woke up every morning covered in sand, and sand was in every crack of everything we packed. If tent camping here, I strongly recommend packing everything you have in plastic storage bins. Also keep in mind that it’s a bit of a hike down to the beach from the car, so try to pack lightly. Bring Deep Woods bug spray- the mosquitos were swarming worse than I’ve ever seen anywhere. They do seem to be aware of this issue, as a truck drove down the beach spraying each afternoon. Fire ants were also a problem- they ate holes in the bottom of our tent and got into the food supply. Again, plastic storage bins would ameliorate this situation. If traveling with kids, pack plenty of food- there’s nowhere to really eat on the island. Overall it was a nice...
Read moreThis by far is one if not the best state park ever. Bruce the camp host, was so helpful. The generosity this gentleman shows towards the park is above and beyond any and all expectations. Gerome the park ranger very friendly and helpful. Regardless of the previous reviews these campgrounds are patrolled in a truck marked state park. This is a state park with lots to do. Camping, fishing, swimming, picnics, kayaking, bike trails, just to name a few. The campgrounds are beachside with fire rings and picnic tables as well as the campground for campers/rvs and yes tents. Seen a comment about car camping, the writter was not happy but this is a campground for everyone. If you don't like camping in a campground with people sitting around a campfire cooking food and having a great time, then you should probably stay in an RV park. This park is gorgeous, fun, a place to relax after fishing and the people who take care of this park are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. We appreciate both of you and it's good to see the progress of fully opening up. By the way, yes there are fish in the lagoon, and if your nice Bruce will teach you some...
